The Delhi High Court on Thursday issued notice to Wikipedia on ANI’s contempt petition.
The Delhi High Court on Thursday (September 5) told Wikipedia that we will shut down your business in India. We will ask the government to shut down Wikipedia. If you don’t like India, then don’t work here.
Actually, the matter is related to a defamation case against Wikipedia. News agency ANI had sued Wikipedia in July 2024. ANI alleges that it has been described as a propaganda tool of the central government on Wikipedia. ANI has demanded its removal from Wikipedia and has demanded damages of Rs 2 crore.

ANI said- Wikipedia published false content to defame
The news agency claimed that the Wikipedia Foundation published false and defamatory content to tarnish the image of the news agency and defame them. ANI alleges that the platform allows users to edit its pages.
The High Court had issued a summons to Wikipedia on July 9. In the last hearing on August 20, the court had sought information from Wikipedia about the 3 subscribers who made edits on the ANI page.

However, Wikipedia did not provide the subscribers’ information to the court. ANI filed a contempt petition against Wikipedia on September 5, accusing it of not following the court’s order. The High Court has issued a notice to Wikipedia on the contempt petition.
The lawyer representing Wikipedia said that they do not have a unit in India. Therefore, it will take more time for them to respond. Justice Naveen Chawla strongly objected to this argument. He has ordered the representative of Wikipedia to appear in court on October 25.
