PM Modi welcoming Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Bharat Mandapam ahead of the 18th BRICS Summit.
China’s Foreign Ministry said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi talked about India’s independent foreign policy during his meeting with Xi Jinping. According to China, PM Modi said that India will not allow its land to be used for anti-China activities.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Monday that the most important consensus reached in the meeting between Jinping and Modi in Delhi was that China and India should not remain rivals but partners.
According to Wang, the two leaders also agreed to maintain peace in the border areas. This meeting of the two leaders took place on September 12-13 on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS conference.
Wang said- cooperation between the two countries is increasing
Wang said that trade between the two countries has reached record levels and people-to-people contacts have increased more than ever. He said that the improvement in relations between the two countries is good news for the more than 2.8 billion population of China and India.
Besides, it will also play an important role in strengthening cooperation between the countries of the Global South. Under the strategic direction of the leaders of both countries, China-India relations have gradually come out of the bad phase. Now after the resumption of relations between the two countries, they are reaching a new level.
‘The border dispute should be seen in the context of the entire relationship’
Wang said the border dispute should be seen in the larger context of the entire China-India relationship. He said that dialogue and cooperation should remain the main direction of relations between the two countries.
He appealed to both the countries to accelerate their development and national progress. Also said that China and India should together contribute to regional and global peace and shared prosperity.
Modi said – differences should not become disputes
According to India’s Foreign Ministry, in his meeting with Jinping, PM Modi emphasized on taking the relationship forward from a long-term perspective.
PM Modi said that differences between the two countries should not turn into disputes. He talked about taking the relationship forward on the basis of three principles of mutual respect, sensitivity and mutual interest.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Modi said that a strategic and long-term perspective is necessary to handle the relations between the two countries.
Cooperation will increase in air connectivity and other areas
- Both leaders agreed that development would be made the basis of common interests.
- Under this, along with increasing contact between culture and people, cooperation will also be increased in areas like direct air connectivity between the two countries.
- Both countries also agreed to support each other during the BRICS chairmanship. China will take over the chairmanship of BRICS in 2027.
- Apart from this, it was agreed to strengthen coordination on international forums like United Nations, Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and G20 and increase cooperation between the countries of the Global South.
Meeting held amid tension in Arunachal
The meeting between PM Modi and Jinping took place at a time when reports of tension between Indian and Chinese soldiers have emerged in the remote Tasing area of Arunachal Pradesh.
According to Hindustan Times, there were several face-offs between the soldiers of the two countries in July and August. The Tasing area is located near the India-China border and there has been tension in the past regarding the presence of soldiers from both the countries.
India and China have been trying to reduce border tension and improve mutual relations for some time. According to the Defense Ministry report, China has reduced its army deployment on the LAC and troops have been withdrawn from some areas.
But the news of new tension in Tsing can be considered a challenge to the efforts to increase trust between the two countries.
