Cyber crime dens of India’s neighboring country Myanmar are again in the headlines. 30-year-old Kaustubh Shejwal, a resident of Nashik, Maharashtra, trapped in these bases, has released a video and pleaded for help.
With the promise of a call center job in Bangkok with a monthly salary of Rs 70,000, he fell into the trap of Myanmar’s swindlers. The kidnappers have demanded Rs 8 lakh for his release. Kaustubh, who has been allegedly held hostage in Myanmar since April, has said that 800 to 1000 Indians are trapped in these fraud bases.
Mohammad Usman Ansari and Mohammad Hasan Raza from Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh and Anuranjan Kumar from Sitamarhi in Bihar are some such victims. They have also told through video that they are being forced to commit cyber fraud. If the target is not achieved, electric shocks and beatings are given.
A group called ‘Civil Society Network for Human Trafficking Victim Assistance’, which helps victims of human trafficking, estimates that despite several actions and the rescue of hostages, more than 5,300 foreign nationals may still be trapped in these bases.
Among them, about 1,600 are Chinese citizens. About 200 Burmese nationals, 20 Thai nationals as well as citizens of the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia, Brazil, Russia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Zimbabwe are included.
Action: Many hostages have been rescued in Myanmar, UN operation
The United Nations estimates that there could be more than 1 lakh people in these scam centers in Myanmar who are forced to work there against their will. Following UN and foreign pressure, the Myanmar administration has taken action against this illegal criminal ‘industry’ worth billions of dollars.
Due to the efforts of the Government of India, Ministry of External Affairs, National Investigation Agency etc., in the last one and a half to two years, more than 2400 Indians have been brought back safely from cyber scam centers in Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos.
The center is in the high security compound built on the border of three countries.
