Foreign Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday informed the Parliament regarding the dispute between India and China. The Foreign Minister told the House that he wants to tell the House about the recent developments on the India and China border and the subsequent impact on the relationship between the two countries.

The Foreign Minister said that the House knows that since the 1962 war, China has illegally occupied 38 thousand square kilometers of India’s land in Aksai Chin. Pakistan had illegally occupied 50,180 square km of India in this area since 1948, which it has handed over to Pakistan.

India negotiated for several decades to resolve the border dispute. There is Line of Actual Control (LAC) as the border dividing between the two countries. There is no agreement between the two countries regarding this in many areas.

There was tension between India and China over the border dispute in eastern Ladakh for four years. After two years of long negotiations, an agreement was reached between the two countries in October. After this, the armies of both the countries have retreated from Depsang and Demchok.

According to the agreement, both the armies will return to their previous status from April 2020. Also, she will patrol the same areas where she used to patrol before April 2020. Apart from this, commander level meetings will continue

There was tension in Depsang and Demchok after the Galwan clash between India and China troops in 2020. After about 4 years, on October 21, a new patrolling agreement was signed between the two countries. Foreign Minister S Jaishankar had said that its objective is to stop Galwan-like skirmishes in Ladakh and to restore the situation like before.
