At least 1,500 death row prisoners at Iran’s largest jail have sewn their lips shut as part of a mass hunger strike against a surge in executions, according to rights groups.
The protest at Ghezel Hesar prison near Tehran comes amid growing concerns over the use of the death penalty in cases linked to drug offences and anti-government protests.
Prisoners demand end to executions
According to Iranian rights groups, the hunger strike began two weeks ago after six prisoners convicted on drug-related charges were moved to solitary confinement ahead of their possible executions, The Guardian reported.
Videos shared by rights organisations based outside Iran show prisoners gathered inside the prison, holding placards reading “No to Executions” and chanting “Be our voice”.

In one video, a prisoner says he decided to sew his lips shut after officials failed to respond to the hunger strike. The footage shows another prisoner using a needle and thread to stitch his lips together. Other prisoners called for medical help, saying some inmates’ health conditions were worsening.
