In the 10th and penultimate round of the 46th Chess Olympiad going on in Uzbekistan, the Indian men’s team defeated Uzbekistan-2 by 3.5-0.5 and secured second place in the points table. India has 17 points, while Uzbekistan is on top with 18 points. In the last round, India will face Hungary, while Uzbekistan team will play Ukraine.
World champion for India D Gukesh, R. Praggnanand and Nihal Sarin won. Arjun Erigaysi’s match was a draw.
Pragyananand, Nihal and Gukesh won
R. Praggnanand defeated Jakhongir Vahidov. The contest between the two reached the Major Pieces Endgame. Praggnanandha played better here and defeated Vahidov.
The match between Arjun Erigaysi and Abdimalik Abdisalimov ended in a draw. Arjun had chances to turn the situation in his favor, but he could not win.
Nihal Sarin defeated Muhammadjokhid Suyarov. Nihal maintained the lead from the beginning. He took advantage of Suyarov’s mistake and won the match.
D Gukesh defeated Ortik Nigmatov. Gukesh kept his position strong from the beginning by playing with white pieces. He won in 47 moves. With this victory, Gukesh’s personal score increased to 8.5 points in 10 matches.
Points table: India one point behind Uzbekistan
After the 10th round, Uzbekistan is in first place with 18 points. India is in second place with 17 points. Ukraine, Germany and Hungary have 16 points each.
Gold if India wins and Uzbekistan loses
In the last round, India has to play Hungary and Uzbekistan has to play Ukraine. If India beats Hungary and Uzbekistan loses to Ukraine, then India will top with 19 points and win the gold medal.
If India wins and Uzbekistan’s match remains a draw, then both the teams will be on 19-19 points. In such a situation, the medal will be decided by tie-break.
Women’s team’s 2-2 draw with China
In the 10th round of the women’s section being played in Samarkand itself, the match between India and China ended in a 2-2 draw. The match between the two teams was full of ups and downs.
The match between India’s Vantika Agarwal and China’s Lu Miaoyi remained evenly matched for a long time. Vantika had to face defeat in the endgame. After this, as per the results of the remaining matches, the score of both the teams remained 2-2.
After this draw, China is in first place with 18 points. Kazakhstan is in second place with 17 points. India, Poland and Vietnam have 16 points each.
Kazakhstan defeated France
Kazakhstan won second place in the women’s category by defeating France 2.5-1.5. Kazakhstan’s Bibisara Asoubaeva won, while 16-year-old Elnaz Kaliakhmet also scored a crucial win against France.
After this victory, Kazakhstan got 17 points and the team reached second place after China.
