Iran has stopped the supply of LPG to Pakistan. Pakistan imports about 50% of its total LPG requirement from Iran. In such a situation, the problems of common people have increased due to stoppage of supply.
The price of a 12 kg cylinder has increased from 4500 Pakistani rupees to 7000 Pakistani rupees in a few days. That means the price has increased by Rs 2500.

Gas supply stopped due to border closure
The two major border crossings between Pakistan and Iran at Gabad-Rimdan and Taftan were closed on 17 October. The government of Pakistan’s Balochistan province cited security concerns and stopping smuggling as the reason, while Iran cited technical problems.
According to Pakistan LPG Association, about 7000 metric tons of LPG comes to Pakistan daily from Iran.
Shamsul Haq, former president of Gwadar Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said that more than 4000 tonnes of gas comes every day from the Gabd-Rimdan border alone. At present this supply has been stopped.
Imports from Oman and Iraq also affected
Pakistan imports about 70% of its LPG requirement from abroad. Apart from Iran, gas also comes from Iraq and Oman.
According to Pakistan’s Petroleum Minister Ali Pervez Malik, the country requires about 6500 to 7000 tonnes of LPG every day. Out of this, 2000 to 2500 tonnes of gas is produced in the country, while the remaining requirement is met through imports.
But due to the blockage caused by Iran’s war in the Strait of Hormuz, imports from Iraq and Oman have also been affected.
Cylinders are being sold at more than double the government price
Pakistan’s Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has fixed the price of 11.8 kg domestic LPG cylinder at 3296 Pakistani rupees. Despite this, cylinders are being sold in the market at more than double the government price.
According to Pakistan LPG Association President Irfan Khokhar, a 12 kg cylinder is being sold for around Rs 7000 in Balochistan, Rs 7500 in Lahore and up to Rs 8200 in Skardu.
Government said- situation will improve soon
Pakistan’s Petroleum Minister Ali Pervez Malik said that the government itself will import LPG and make it available in the market. He expressed hope that prices will start improving in the next 2 to 3 days.
In a program of Geo News, Malik said that the price of LPG should be between 400 to 425 Pakistani rupees per kg. He warned of action against those charging high prices. The minister also said that the government will make the process of determining the price of LPG transparent.
Malik claimed that the difference between market and local LPG prices is making a difference of about 30 billion Pakistani rupees. He alleged that some people are charging high prices by taking stay order from the court. The minister said that the Prime Minister has asked the Attorney General to take steps to get the stay order removed by lobbying in the remaining cases.
Hundreds of trucks stuck on the border
Big LPG tanker trucks are parked in Quetta, Pakistan.
Due to border closure, hundreds of trucks including LPG tankers are stranded on both sides of the border of Pakistan and Iran. According to Shamsul Haq, more than 1000 Pakistani containers were loaded with potatoes, bananas and rice, which were to be sent to Iran.
Truck drivers said that they have been waiting for the border to open for many days and they are not even getting basic facilities properly. Driver Abdul Ghani Baloch said they were stuck there for more than a week.
