The next day after the accident, PM Modi met Vishwas in the hospital.
‘It has been a full year since that ill-fated day of 12th June 2025. But time has stood still for me. People call me ‘miraculous’ because when Air India’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed just after taking off from Ahmedabad airport, I was the only survivor among the 260 people on board. But to be honest, I am paying the price of this survival by giving a part of my soul every day.
Vishwas Kumar Ramesh, the only survivor of this accident, also lost his brother in this crash. Ramesh said that no matter what investigation is done into the accident, my brother cannot be returned. But, we all have every right to know what happened that day. In an emotional appeal, Vishwas has sought ‘honesty, transparency’ before the final report is released by the investigators. Read what else he said…

After the plane accident, Ramesh Vishwas Kumar came out of the incident site on foot.
Even today that dreadful scene is visible: Ramesh
Ramesh said- Even today, when I close my eyes, I see those screams, fire and that horrifying scene. I survived, but with deep mental scars. Today is the first anniversary of the tragedy. The Civil Aviation Minister had said last month that the investigation was in the “final stage” and the report would come by Barsi.
Initial reports, just 30 days after the accident, said that immediately after take-off, both fuel switches of the aircraft had come to the ‘cut-off’ position, cutting off fuel to the engines. But why did this happen? Was it a technical fault or someone’s negligence? The answer to this question has not been received even after a year.
He further said – I and hundreds of victim families like me want only three things – honesty, transparency and answers to our questions. No report can bring back my brother, nor can it bring those 260 people back alive. But the affected families have the right to know what happened to their loved ones that day.

Air India’s AI17 plane crashed in Ahmedabad on 12 June 2025.
I have not been able to return to work due to shock: Ramesh
My life has gone off track since the accident. Air India had given 21,500 pounds (about Rs 23 lakh) for help, but that amount is very small in front of this bitter reality. Due to mental trauma I have not been able to return to work normally. My family in London is forced to survive on £1,000 (less than Rs 1 lakh) every month.
My representative Sanjeev Patel several times asked for an appointment with the CEO of Air India, but he did not consider it necessary. Recently, Air India officials and Tata Group representatives met, but important issues related to compensation and assistance are still pending. Despite being a British citizen, I or other British victims’ families did not receive help from the UK government.
Our lawyers are preparing legal action. The final investigation report is awaited so that the real responsibility can be determined. Air India spokesperson talks about being in touch, but now concrete results are needed more than promises. Every day I wake up in the hope of justice, so that hundreds of families like mine can get a little relief from this pain.

Air India compensated 96% of the affected families
Air India on Thursday said that it has given interim compensation of Rs 25 lakh each to 96% of the families affected by the plane crash that occurred on June 12, 2025 in Ahmedabad. Only those families whose documentation is incomplete or where there are disputes in the family have not received compensation. Also, 94% of the people injured on the ground have either received full compensation in one go. The rest had taken forms from the helpdesk, but have not yet submitted them.
Tata Sons has formed the AI171 Memorial and Welfare Trust to help those affected by the AI171 disaster. Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran had announced an assistance of ₹1 crore for the families of all those who died. The entire ₹1 crore has been given to 91% families.
