The Trump administration says that if the tariffs are removed, the billions of dollars already recovered will have to be returned, which will cause a deep injury to the US economy.

Only 15% tariffs can be applied for 150 days

The court said that under the Trade Act of Trump 1974, 15% tariffs can be made for 150 days, but for this a solid reason is required.

Trump imposed tariffs on countries like China, Canada, Mexico for trade deficit and other reasons. After this, small traders and some states complained of these tariffs, as this was increasing their costs.

Trump imposed 50% tariff on India

The Trump administration has imposed a 50% tariff on India, which has been implemented from August 27. According to the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) report, this new tariff can affect India’s export of about ₹ 5.4 lakh crore.

50% tariffs will make Indian products like clothes sold in the US, James-Jewelry, Furniture, C Food expensive. This can reduce their demand by 70%.

Countries with low tariffs like China, Vietnam and Mexico will sell these goods at cheap prices. This will reduce Indian companies’ share in the US market.

Russian oil purchase caused tariff

On August 6, Trump announced this tariff as a fine on oil purchase from Russia. At the same time, I had imposed 25% tariff on India from August 7, citing trade deficit.

India is the largest buyer of Russian oil after China. Before the Ukraine War, India used to import only 0.2% (68 thousand barrels per day) from Russia.

By May 2023 it increased to 45% (2 million barrels per day), while India is buying 17.8 lakh barrels of oil from Russia every day from January to July in 2025.

For the last two years, India has been buying more than $ 130 billion (Rs 11.33 lakh crore) every year.
