The MBBS seats have nearly tripled over the past decade. At first glance, it should make admission easier. Yet for millions of students appearing for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG), securing an MBBS seat remain one of the country’s most competitive academic pursuits.

Government data show the number of seats rising from around 65,000 in 2016 to more than 1 lakh by 2023, crossing 1.2 lakh in 2025 and reaching about 1.39 lakh in the latest 2026 figures. The expansion, however, has been accompanied by a rapid increase in the number of students taking NEET.

Government medical colleges have added 2,786 MBBS seats, taking their total capacity to 63,971 seats across 445 institutions. While private medical colleges, meanwhile, have added 10,400 seats, taking their total intake to 76,243 seats across 391 colleges. Private institutions therefore account for nearly 79% of the 13,186 increased seats, while government colleges account for around 21%.

The total undergraduate medical seat intake during round 2 stood at 1,40,214 seats across 836 medical colleges. As per the revised matrix, 1,27,028 MBBS seats were renewed, while 13,186 seats were added in the second round.

The Uttarakhand government has widened its probe into alleged irregularities in NEET UG 2026 medical admissions, ordering verification of documents submitted by 778 candidates admitted to MBBS and BDS courses under the state quota. The candidates belong to reserved categories including SC, ST, OBC, EWS and dependents of freedom fighters. Their original certificates will be sent to respective district administrations for verification. The scrutiny follows complaints over allegedly fraudulent certificates, particularly those linked to the freedom fighter quota. HNB Uttarakhand Medical Education University said 778 of 1,112 candidates who received provisional admissions or opted to float used reserved-category benefits. The verification will assess their eligibility documents.

The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has announced the fee structure for candidates participating in Round 2 of NEET UG Counselling 2026. The amount varies depending on the candidate’s category and includes both a non-refundable registration fee and a refundable security deposit.

For Unreserved (UR) and EWS candidates, the non-refundable registration fee is Rs 1,000, while candidates belonging to SC, ST, OBC and PwD categories are required to pay Rs 500.

In addition to the registration fee, candidates must submit a refundable security deposit. UR and EWS candidates have to pay Rs 10,000, whereas the security deposit for SC, ST, OBC and PwD candidates is Rs 5,000.

Therefore, the total amount payable for Round 2 registration is Rs 11,000 for UR/EWS candidates and Rs 5,500 for SC/ST/OBC/PwD candidates.

Candidates applying for seats or institutions with separate fee requirements, including Central Universities, AFMC and ESI, should check the applicable counselling guidelines before making the payment.
