The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a warning to its airlines on Friday. It said they should be cautious when flying over Mexico, Central America and parts of South America. This warning has been given due to possible military activities and the threat of interruption of GPS signals. The FAA has issued Notices to Airmen (NOTAM) for Mexico, Central American countries, Ecuador, Colombia, and some airspace in the eastern Pacific Ocean. These warnings will be effective for 60 days starting from January 16, 2026, i.e. till March 2027. The Mexican government responded to the FAA’s warning, saying it was just a precaution. Due to this, there are no restrictions on Mexico’s airspace or its airlines. This notice applies only to US operators (airlines) and flights into Mexico will continue as normal. Trump had said on December 8 that drug cartels in Mexico were running the country and the US could launch ground attacks against them. America will eliminate the drug cartels on the ground. After the action on Venezuela, President Donald Trump had said on December 8 that his administration would soon start taking action to target the drug cartels on the ground. Trump claimed in an interview with Fox News that Mexico is ruled by drug cartels. These are causing the death of 2.5 lakh to 3 lakh people every year in America. He said that smuggling of drugs through sea route has been stopped by 97%, so now action will be taken on land. However, he did not give any further information about the plans. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has given a strong response to Trump’s statements. After Maduro’s arrest, he said that America is not the owner of any area. Trump said – Offered to end drug cartels in Mexico, the President did not agree. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum made it clear that Mexico completely rejects interference in the internal affairs of other countries. Trump claimed that he repeatedly offered to Sheinbaum to eliminate the cartels by sending American troops, but he turned them down. Sheinbaum mentioned the ongoing cooperation between the two countries in stopping drug trafficking, but vehemently denied the presence of American troops. Claim- America will conduct air strike on drug mafia in Mexico. Trump had said in October 2025 that he is preparing to send US army and intelligence officers to Mexico to deal with drug smuggling. This claim was made in the report of American news channel NBC News. The report quoted two current and two retired American officials as saying that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) may also be involved in this mission. According to these officials, the Trump administration has started planning for this operation to target drug cartels in Mexico. Officials also said that initial training related to this possible mission has started. According to the plan, the operation can also take place on Mexican soil. Plan of air strikes and drone strikes: According to NBC News report, teams of America’s Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) may be involved in this operation, which will work under the jurisdiction of CIA. Under the mission, drone strikes are planned to target drug labs and cartel leaders. There are many drones that require operators on the ground to operate them. Drug smuggling gangs were declared as terrorist organizations. In February 2025, the US State Department had declared 6 Mexican cartels, MS-13 gang and Venezuela’s ‘Tren de Aragua’ as foreign terrorist organizations. This gives free rein to the US Army and CIA to conduct covert operations. Trump has previously said that he had authorized CIA action in Venezuela and that he would target cartels on the ground if necessary. Mexico is considered the hub of the world’s largest drug smuggling network, from where extremely dangerous drugs like cocaine, heroin, meth and fentanyl reach America. According to American agencies, the largest supply of drugs in the country is through Mexican cartels. America is the world’s largest drug market. Every year millions of people become victims of drug addiction and thousands of deaths occur due to drugs like fentanyl. There is constant pressure on the US government to take strict measures against drug trafficking and that is why it keeps an eye on the cartels present in Mexico. On the other hand, the cartels have become so powerful in Mexico that in many areas they challenge the police and the government. Many times even the local administration is unable to stop them due to armed gangs, threats, corruption and violence. Many cartels run themselves like shadow governments. Sinaloa Cartel also has a stockpile of rifles and tanks. According to a report by The Guardian, Mexico’s largest Sinaloa Cartel has more than 600 planes and helicopters. This number is five times more than Mexico’s largest airline, Aero Mexico. Cartels are now focusing more on drones and armored vehicles. Such as the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) has groups equipped with machine guns, tanks and body armour. Overall, the cartels’ “private army” or members were estimated at 160,000 to 185,000 in 2022–2023, making them the fifth largest employer in Mexico. According to a 2022 report by the Mexican Interior Ministry, the cartels have stockpiles of assault rifles such as AK-47s and M-80s. Every year, more than 20 thousand assault rifles are recovered by security agencies from the possession of drug cartels. Mexico’s Drug Cartels Are the Most Profitable Criminal Groups The Mexican government destroys weapons seized from the cartels. These are not used again. The cartels sell these weapons in exchange for the supply of drugs from the American mafia. Over the course of 5 years the cartel has also acquired rocket launchers. They are used to attack government reconnaissance planes. According to the UN World Drug Report 2025, Mexico’s drug cartels are now the world’s most profitable criminal groups, earning more than $12.1 billion (about Rs 1 lakh crore) annually. This comes mainly from the trafficking of cocaine, heroin, meth and fentanyl, and Mexico’s cartels have overtaken Colombia’s cartels. US-Mexico trade agreement is also in danger After Trump’s threat, questions are being raised on the future of the USMCA (United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement) free trade agreement between the US, Mexico and Canada. However, Mexico’s Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard insisted on Thursday that the agreement was strong and that the three countries would soon reach an agreement to extend it. “We are already reviewing the treaty and we have to complete it by July 1, 2026,” Ebrard said at a press conference. He said that good progress has been made on all important issues of the three countries. The statement comes at a time when US President Donald Trump again this week raised doubts over the future of the agreement. Trump had said, “There is no real benefit to America in this, it is useless to us.” This year the three countries will jointly review the USMCA. The USMCA agreement came into force in 2020, which replaced the old NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement). It is the backbone of Mexico’s economy. Trade between the three countries amounts to approximately $2 trillion annually. The three countries are to jointly review it in 2026. If all three agree to extend it in the review, the agreement will run without any changes for the next 16 years (till 2036). If not, there will be a review every year and uncertainty will remain.
