Gnanesekaran, accused in the Anna University sexual assault case, was on Monday awarded life imprisonment for 30 years.
Pronouncing the verdict, the Madras High Court also asked Gnanesekaran to pay a fine of Rs 90,000.
On May 28, the Chennai Mahila Court found the accused, Gnanesekaran, guilty of all eleven charges in the Anna University sexual abuse case.
The accused was convicted under 11 sections, after the Opposition alleged he had close links with DMK leaders, including Tamil Nadu’s Deputy Chief Minister, Udhayanidhi Stalin.
THE ANNA UNIVERSITY SEXUAL ASSAULT CASE
On December 24, 2024, a 19-year-old second-year student of Anna University was allegedly sexually assaulted by a man on the campus.
The incident had led to protests by AIADMK MLAs and several other political parties, who raised concerns about the state government’s handling of the case.
The parties accused the DMK government of going slow on the case.
Later, on January 9, the AIADMK MLAs protested symbolically by wearing black shirts on the first day of the Tamil Nadu assembly session, which commenced on January 6.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin assured that his government stands with the victim and highlighted that the accused was arrested shortly after the incident.
However, the protests continued with the AIADMK alleging the DMK government in the state was incapable of preventing incidents of sexual assaults against women and children.
