Actor Amjad Khan mainly directed two Hindi films as a director, which include ‘Chor Police’ (1983) and ‘Amir Aadmi Garib Aadmi’ (1985).

‘I was that guy who used to exercise for 4–5 hours every day. I used to play badminton, do free-hand exercises, lift weights… but then an accident happened and I was bedridden for three months.

In an old interview, late actor Amjad Khan had said this while remembering the most painful phase of his life. He had told that almost all the bones of the body were broken in the accident. Doctors forbade him to exercise for three years. As soon as he managed to recover, another accident happened and he broke his leg. After this, he got an attack of paralysis and had to stay in bed for months.

Today, on the 34th death anniversary of Amjad Khan, let us know some unheard stories of his life.

Father left police job and came into films

Amjad Khan’s father Jayant was an actor. His real name was Zakaria Khan. After initial studies, Jayant started working as a police officer in Alwar, Rajasthan. However, he left his government job to enter films.

Director Vijay Bhatt gave him a new name – ‘Jayant’. Due to his tall stature, resonant voice and brilliant screen presence, he gained recognition as a hero and later as a character actor in many films in the 1930s and 40s. He also worked with big stars like Dilip Kumar, Madhubala and Kishore Kumar.

Jayant worked in many great films like 'Amar', 'Memdidi' and 'Heer Ranjha'.

Like his father, Amjad Khan also entered films, but Jayant could not see his son’s biggest success. He died of throat cancer on 2 June 1975 and the film ‘Sholay’ was released about two months later.

There was not even ₹400 to bring the wife from the hospital.

When Amjad Khan’s son was born, the family was going through a very difficult time. The financial crisis was so severe that after the birth of his son, Amjad Khan did not even have Rs 300-400 to bring his wife home from the maternity hospital, but on the same day his luck took a turn. The day his son was born, he got a chance to sign the film ‘Sholay’. This film later became the biggest identity of his life.

How did I get the chance to become Gabbar Singh of Sholay?

The character of Gabbar Singh in ‘Sholay’ is counted among the most iconic characters of Bollywood. Director Ramesh Sippy first wanted to cast Danny Denzongpa for this role. But at that time Danny was going to Afghanistan for the shooting of Firoz Khan’s film ‘Dharmatma’, so he left the film. After this, this role was also offered to Ranjeet, but he refused because of Danny’s friendship. Later this role was played by Amjad Khan.

Regarding how Amjad Khan got this role, his son Shadab Khan had told that the first thing writer Salim Khan had said to director Ramesh Sippy was, “Amjad Khan is a boy… he is a very good actor, just see him once.”

Meanwhile, actor Satyen Kapoor also strongly recommended Amjad Khan to Ramesh Sippy. He said, “I consider myself a good actor, but Amjad is a better actor than me. Please give him a chance.”

The words of Salim Khan and Satyen Kapoor stuck in Ramesh Sippy’s mind. After this he saw the powerful performance of Amjad Khan in a play. Impressed by his acting, Ramesh Sippy called him for audition. The audition was successful and Amjad Khan got the role of Gabbar Singh in ‘Sholay’. What happened after this became the history of Indian cinema.

Amjad Khan's character Gabbar Singh in the film 'Sholay' was a ruthless dacoit.

Amjad Khan’s character Gabbar Singh in the film ‘Sholay’ was a ruthless dacoit.

It was suggested to dub Gabbar’s voice.

Gabbar Singh’s resonant voice in Sholay still gives goosebumps to people. “How many men were there?”, “What will happen to you Kaliya?” And “Give me this hand, Thakur!” Like the dialogues became immortal only because of Amjad Khan’s voice. However, there came a time when preparations were being made to change Gabbar’s voice.

The film’s director Ramesh Sippy had told in an interview given to Arbaaz Khan that the writer duo Salim-Javed did not have confidence in Amjad Khan’s voice in the beginning. He believed that Gabbar’s voice should be dubbed.

However, Ramesh Sippy was not in favor of this decision. He believed that Amjad Khan’s different and unique voice was the biggest strength of this character.

Recently Amjad Khan’s son Shadab Khan also mentioned this incident. He told that Amitabh Bachchan had also clearly told Ramesh Sippy, “Don’t tamper with his voice at all, this is his biggest strength.”

Ramesh Sippy supported Amitabh’s point and kept Amjad Khan’s original voice in the film. The result was that the same voice became one of the most memorable and terrifying voices of Hindi cinema.

Amitabh Bachchan and Amjad Khan worked together in many films, including 'Sholay', 'Muqaddar Ka Sikandar', 'Mr Natwarlal', 'Laawaris' and 'Satte Pe Satta'.

When the tarot reader had already said – ‘The film will work with this man’

The shooting of the film ‘Sholay’ was going on for more than a year. Seeing the long schedule, many people from the film industry used to make fun of Ramesh Sippy. Meanwhile, Ramesh Sippy along with Amjad Khan came to meet the famous tarot card reader Dolores. At that time Amjad Khan was in the look of Gabbar Singh after the shooting.

According to Shadab Khan, Dolores told Ramesh Sippy as soon as she opened the Tarot card, “Your film will be a superhit. It will run for five consecutive years… and the reason for this will be this man.” Saying this he pointed directly towards Amjad Khan. Both Ramesh Sippy and Amjad Khan were shocked.

The iconic dialogue of the film ‘Sholay’ is ‘Hey O Sambha, kitne aadmi the?’ Even today it is on people’s lips. Amjad Khan got the inspiration for this dialogue from the washerman of his house.

The washerman who used to come to Amjad Khan’s house to collect clothes, used to call people in a very unique way by saying “Hey O Shanti…”.

When Amjad Khan got a chance to play the character of Gabbar Singh in ‘Sholay’, he incorporated the same style in his acting.

An accident changed the whole life of Amjad Khan

In 1976, Amjad Khan was going to Goa with his family for the shooting of the film ‘The Great Gambler’. His son Shadab Khan had told that Amjad Khan himself was driving the car. His wife Shaila Khan and Shadab were sitting behind. At that time Shaila was pregnant with her daughter Ahlam.

It was morning. The road was wet due to night rain. Then suddenly a broken truck appeared on the road, around which stones were placed as a warning. Amjad Khan immediately turned the car to avoid the truck, but the car lost its balance on the wet road and crashed directly into a tree.

The accident was so terrible that Amjad Khan almost lost his life. His wife was seriously injured, while Shadab’s collar bone was broken. The entire family was immediately taken to the hospital. As soon as the news of the accident was received, Amitabh Bachchan had made treatment and other arrangements from Mumbai.

Satyajit Ray said in the hospital – don’t die for my film

After the horrific road accident in 1976, Amjad Khan was battling between life and death in the hospital. Many times his condition became so serious. At the same time, great filmmaker Satyajit Ray reached the hospital to meet him.

Amjad Khan was not even fully conscious at that time. Satyajit Ray sat near him and said, “Amjad, I am making ‘Shatranj Ke Khiladi’ and only you can play the character of Wajid Ali Shah in it. If anything happens to you, I will not make this film at all. So for my film… don’t die.”

Shadab Khan had told that his father was between unconsciousness and consciousness at that time, but he felt the words of Satyajit Ray. Amjad Khan eventually recovered after defeating death and later played the memorable role of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah in ‘Shatranj Ke Khiladi’.

The film 'Shatranj Ke Khiladi' was released in the year 1977. This film was based on the famous story of Munshi Premchand.

In a horrific road accident in 1976, Amjad Khan suffered several broken bones, a damaged lung and a serious neck injury. After this he had to wear a support collar on his neck for a long time.

He remained bedridden for about a year. Due to continuous medicines and rest, his weight started increasing rapidly. Shadab says that his father was very fit before the accident. He was very fond of cricket and badminton and was also an excellent player. But after the accident, the rod in his leg was not removed for almost 20 years, due to which he could not run or exercise as before. Gradually his health started deteriorating and increasing weight became his biggest problem.

The son had raised his hand on the doctor

On the evening of 27 July 1992, Amjad Khan was resting in his room. He woke up several times throughout the day, then went to sleep again. The family thought he was just tired.

Son Shadab Khan returned home at around 8 pm. Then his mother said, “Go and check… your dad is not waking up.”

Shadab immediately reached the room. He tried to wake his father up, but there was no movement. His body had become cold.

Shadab Khan has worked in projects like 'Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat', 'Betaabi', 'Hey Ram' and 'Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story'.

The doctor was called immediately. After examination, the doctor told that Amjad Khan has suffered a massive heart attack and needs a special injection. Without wasting a moment, 18 year old Shadab set out in the car to get the medicine. He was driving at such a high speed that even today he is surprised that no accident happened on the way.

But when he returned after taking the injection, the doctor said just one sentence, ‘You arrived a few seconds late.’

On hearing this, Shadab burst out in anger and pain. He raised his hand at the doctor, broke the crockery and cutlery in the house, punched the wall and even got into a scuffle with a close friend of the father. Later recently Shadab admitted that he was only 18 years old at that time. The pain of losing his father was so deep that he could not control himself.

Underworld had called Amjad Khan’s family Amjad Khan’s son Shadab Khan had told in an interview to journalist Vicky Lalwani that a few months after his father’s death, his family had received a call from the underworld.

According to Shadab, around ₹ 1.27 crore fees for Amjad Khan’s films were outstanding to many big film producers. This amount was huge at that time, but the family never got it back.

In the interview, Shadab told that a gangster associated with the Middle East had called his mother and said that he could collect the entire amount from Bollywood and send it to her home within three days. However, his mother immediately rejected this proposal. She had said, “My husband never took help from the underworld. I don’t want to start something like this even after his death.”
