All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) President Asaduddin Owaisi, who is searching for political ground in Rajasthan, has his eyes on the Muslim community of the state. Owaisi’s party, which is trying its luck in the urban body elections of the state, has suffered a major political setback. After the Election Commission, now the Jaipur bench of Rajasthan High Court has also rejected the demand of allotting ‘Kite’ as their official election symbol to AIMIM candidates.
After this decision of the High Court Rajasthan Owaisi’s ‘kite’ will not be able to fly in the urban body elections. In such a situation, now AIMIM candidates will have to contest as independents. Not only this, the party’s candidates will have to try their luck with different election symbols on different seats.

The coming together of these two parties is being seen as a big political experiment in the form of ‘third option’ in the politics of the state.
Why did AIMIM not get ‘Kite’ symbol in Rajasthan?
The nomination process has started for the elections of 309 urban local bodies in Rajasthan. After the completion of the nomination and withdrawal process, the State Election Commission will allot election symbols to the candidates. The candidates are expected to receive their election symbols on September 4, where BJP candidates will get ‘Lotus’ symbol and Congress candidates will get ‘Hath ka Panja’ symbol. Asaduddin Owaisi ‘Kite’ symbol will not be allotted to the candidates of AIMIM party.
The State Election Commission had refused to give ‘Kite’ symbol to AIMIM in Rajasthan citing state level recognition in Telangana. AIMIM had approached the court against this decision of the Election Commission. On Monday, a single bench of Justice Manish Sharma of Jaipur High Court refused to immediately intervene in this matter and sought a reply from the state government and the Election Commission within two weeks. By then the process of civic elections will be over, hence the avenues of party symbols have been completely closed for the candidates in this election.
Candidates will try their luck as independent
After the Election Commission got a blow from the court, now AIMIM candidates will have to contest the elections as independent candidates. Instead of ‘Patang’, he will have to contest on other election symbols.
40 symbols like hand mill, camel, bed, slippers, shoe, scissors, sewing machine and harmonium have been fixed for independent candidates in Rajasthan civic elections. AIMIM candidates will have to choose one of these symbols. According to AIMIM spokesperson and advocate Arif Mohammad, the party will file an amended application in the next hearing and appeal for issuing orders for allotting symbols in the upcoming Panchayat elections.
Preparation to create Jat-Muslim equation
Owaisi’s party is contesting the urban body elections in collaboration with MP Hanuman Beniwal’s RLP. On September 6, Asaduddin Owaisi and Hanuman Beniwal will show strength by holding a big joint rally in Shastri Nagar, Jaipur. The plan of both the parties is to contest the elections by creating a Jat-Muslim equation, but this strategy has suffered a major setback due to not getting the party symbol.
Due to AIMIM not getting the ‘Patang’ symbol, while its candidates have to contest on independent or alternative election symbols, it can directly benefit RLP, whose candidates are contesting the elections on their registered symbol. The alliance of Owaisi and Beniwal may seem easy at the top level, but the biggest test of this alliance will be the ability of the Jat and Muslim communities to transfer their votes outright to each other’s candidate at the local bodies and ward level.
