Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday celebrated India’s stronger-than-expected economic performance after the country recorded 7.8% GDP growth in the April-June quarter, while taking a swipe at critics whom he accused of spreading pessimism about the economy.

Reacting to the latest GDP figures, Modi credited the achievement to the resolve and hard work of Indians and said the numbers demonstrated the country’s strength despite a difficult global environment.

“Heartiest congratulations to my fellow citizens. A growth rate of 7.8%—the nation is filled with joy. I congratulate the people of this country for their resolve and their industrious spirit; this reflects our collective strength; this reflects our collective strength. The world is mired in conflict; news of war is coming from all directions, and the globe is beset by crises. Supply chains are severely disrupted. Since the COVID era of 2020, stability has been elusive everywhere. Yet, India continues to progress rapidly. Meanwhile, within the country, there are those mired in the abyss of pessimism, echoing falsehoods and spreading despair. Rising above all this and cutting through these obstacles, the nation has achieved a growth rate of 7.8%. We must maintain this momentum. We must keep moving forward, and for that, becoming Atmanirbhar Bharat is essential,” the prime minister said in a video posted on Instagram and X.

India’s GDP Surges 7.8%

The Prime Minister’s remarks came after official data showed that real GDP at constant prices rose to an estimated Rs 81.36 lakh crore in the first quarter of 2026-27, from Rs 75.46 lakh crore in the corresponding period a year earlier.

The 7.8% expansion was higher than the Reserve Bank of India’s projection of 7% and expectations at the time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty following the conflict in West Asia. India also retained its position as the fastest-growing major economy.

Growth, however, moderated from the 8.6% recorded in the preceding quarter, while remaining stronger than the 6.9% expansion registered in the April-June quarter of 2025-26.

PM Calls Growth Rate ‘Herculean Feat’

PM Modi had earlier described the latest growth figures as a “herculean feat”, arguing that India’s economy had maintained its momentum despite oil price shocks, supply-chain disruptions and broader global uncertainty.

In another post on X following the release of the data, the Prime Minister took aim at those who had questioned the health of the Indian economy, saying that “doomsayers were doomed and India bloomed yet again”.

The latest figures showed broad-based strength across several parts of the economy. Real GVA at basic prices grew 8.2% in the first quarter, while manufacturing GVA expanded 9.2%.

Gross fixed capital formation, a key indicator of investment activity, grew 11.9% during the quarter, significantly higher than the 5.8% expansion recorded in the year-ago period.

Agriculture, livestock, forestry and fishing GVA increased 3.6%, while mining and quarrying contracted 2.4%. The secondary sector grew 8.6% in real terms.

Nominal GDP at current prices was estimated at Rs 88.27 lakh crore in Q1 FY27, compared with Rs 80 lakh crore in the same quarter of the previous fiscal, representing growth of 10.3%.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also welcomed the data, attributing the performance to economic reforms and the government’s management of the economy.

“The credit for this strong performance goes to the people of India and their hard work. Reforms undertaken by the NDA Government, together with an agile management of the economy, are bearing results,” Sitharaman said in a post on X.

India’s economic resilience is attributed to strong macroeconomic fundamentals, expanding retail participation in the stock market, and the government’s capital expenditure push. The country also benefits from its strengths in critical technologies, innovation, and trusted manufacturing ecosystems. Foreign investment is increasingly flowing to India due to weakening prospects in developed markets.
