There has been a controversy over the use of the song ‘Shoorveer’ in ‘Mirzapur: The Movie’. Independent artist Rappariya Balam has alleged that the song was used in the film without his permission. He has sent a legal notice to Excel Entertainment. Rappariya Balam says that he is the copyright owner of the song ‘Shoorveer’. This song is dedicated to Maharana Pratap. He claims that in the film it has been used with Munna Bhaiya’s character of violence, abuses and drugs. Rappariya Balam has demanded to remove the song, apologize and build a school in the name of Maharana Pratap. These three demands are included in the legal notice. The film Mirzapur was released on September 4, in which the song Shoorveer was shown in a violent scene. After the release of the film, Rajasthan’s famous singer Rappariya Balam has released a video saying that this song has been used in the film without his permission. This song is based on the bravery of Maharana Pratap, but the makers of Mirzapur used it to glorify the villain. The music company that released the song gave the copyright to the Mirzapur team. Singer Rappariya Balam claims that he has the copy rights of the song, however, Trooper Records, which released the song, denied this claim. Not only this, the company has also given the rights of this song to the makers of Mirzapur amid the controversy. Rappariya Balam’s claim regarding copyright Rappariya Balam’s brother has told in an interview given to Screen, ‘The song is on the channel of Trooper Records, but the copyright is with us. If it has to be used in a film, permission will have to be taken from us. They can’t license it. This is illegal. Rappariya Balam and Trooper Records previously worked together. Rappariya Balam was not a partner in the documents, but he was working with him. According to the agreement, after a few years he was to become a legal 50% partner in Records. He told that this song was released before the partnership took place. According to him, Rappariya Balam did not receive payment for any of the songs created for that channel. Later, when talks started regarding partnership, Trooper Records started postponing the matter. NOC was never signed regarding these songs. Rappariya Balam’s brother said that he later started his own channel and acquired the copyrights of the songs under his real name Ashok Manda. He said, “All the copyright documents related to ‘Shoorveer’ are on Rappariya Balam’s real name Ashok Manda. He had got the copyright of this song in his name. Later we made 9-10 more songs in the ‘Shoorveer’ series. We have the copyright certificates of all these. We also have NOC from the author.” Objection to the scene on which the song was placed, Rappariya Balam says that the matter is not only about copyright. According to him, the objective of the ‘Shoorveer’ series was to make children understand the stories of Indian history and historical personalities through music. In such a situation, it is completely wrong to use the story of Shoorveer in a violent and bullet-riddled scene of a film. His brother said, “These songs are not commercial. Our aim was to connect the next generation with our history. We wanted children to learn history and stories of their leaders through rap music.” He said that every artist has a dream to have his song in a good film and this was his dream too. But some of his ideologies are associated with this series. He said, “In Mirzapur, Munna Bhaiya is abusing and taking drugs. This song has been used in the background music to show his character. This is an insult to our Rajasthani culture and Maharana Pratap. If a child sees this, he may associate a character like Munna Bhaiya with Maharana Pratap. This will create a wrong impression.” He said that the makers of ‘Mirzapur’ are also responsible in this matter, because they should have checked the correct documents before taking the license. According to him, Excel Entertainment’s mistake is that it chose a song dedicated to Maharana Pratap to show the character of a goon. Contacted Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani Rappariya Balam and his family tried to contact ‘Mirzapur’ producers Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani. According to the family, Farhan Akhtar did not respond. Ritesh Sidhwani’s team said that it will contact him. The family says that they want to talk directly to Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani, not to the team. He said, “We want to understand why they did this. We want the song to be removed from ‘Mirzapur’. It was not made for this film. Showing it in a wrong way is hurting our sentiments and ideology.” The family said that it would not allow this song to be used in the film at any cost. He also declined to speak to Trooper Records.
