A very shocking case of self-immolation by an American activist of Tibetan origin has come to light outside the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York. After this news, there is a wave of mourning in Dharamshala, Himachal. Here prayers were offered for the peace of his soul. The deceased has been identified as Lobsang Palden (Lobga Rangjen). According to the information, Lobga took this suicidal step in strong protest against China’s increasingly repressive policies in Tibet and the ‘Ethnic Unity and Progress’ law recently implemented by Beijing. Since this incident, there is a wave of mourning and anger among Tibetans living in exile all over the world. Lobga had arrived in Tibetan flag and traditional attire According to eyewitnesses and reports, when Lobga Rangjen arrived outside the UN Headquarters, he was wearing ‘Chupa’, the traditional dress of Tibet. He had the national flag of Tibet in one hand. They raised anti-China slogans there and set themselves on fire. Emotional video message released just before self-immolation: Just before committing suicide, Lobga had released a video message, which is now going viral on social media. In the video, he appealed to Tibetans around the world to unite and said that the struggle for Tibet’s independence and our fundamental rights must be intensified. No national goal is achieved without hard efforts. We all have to rise above the region, sect and personal comforts and make our supreme contribution to the welfare of the country.” Mourning in Dharamshala: Central Tibetan Administration organized a prayer meeting. As soon as the news of this tragic incident reached Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh, the atmosphere there became sombre. A special and grand prayer meeting was organized for the peace of the departed soul at the Sikyong Hall of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA). In this meeting, the top leadership of the administration, Buddhist monks and all the government employees. Participated and paid tribute to Lobga. Sikyong Penpa Tsering of the Central Tibetan Administration expressed deep sorrow and concern over the incident and said that the harsh and inhumane laws being imposed in Tibet have forced Lobga to take this suicidal step. They should not choose the path of self-immolation like this.” In this context, CTA’s Minister of Religion and Culture also described human life as precious and said that to keep this long and historical struggle of Tibet alive, it is most important to save the lives of the youth and fight by staying alive. Since 2009, 157 Tibetans have sacrificed their lives. It is noteworthy that this is not the first case of self-immolation in demand of Tibet’s independence, restoration of human rights and return of Tibetan religious leader Dalai Lama to his homeland. Since 2009, a total of 157 Tibetan citizens within Tibet and in different corners of the world have sacrificed their lives by immolating themselves while pleading for justice.
