A case of violation of security and anti-corruption protocols has come to light in the current season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). According to the report of BCCI’s Anti Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU), during many matches, people who were not allowed to be there were seen in the team dugout, hotel and team bus. Taking this negligence seriously, BCCI will issue strict advisory for all the 10 franchises. The board has made it clear that strict action will be taken if such mistake is repeated in future. ACSU expressed concern over the report. IPL chairman Arun Dhumal confirmed that ACSU has submitted a detailed report on the matter to the board. Dhumal said, ‘The anti-corruption unit has pointed out some irregularities. According to the report, outsiders were found in the dugouts, team bus and areas of the hotel where only players and match officials are allowed. The ‘Players and Match Officials Area’ (PMOA) has its own protocols. We will ask the franchises to strictly follow the SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) so that the fairness of the tournament is maintained. Outsiders were reaching the players’ rooms. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia expressed displeasure over this matter. He said that this time flaws have been seen in the behavior of some franchises and players. According to Saikia, ‘We have seen that many outsiders are roaming with the team members. Some people are reaching the hotel rooms where players or team officials are staying without permission. This is a direct violation of our anti-corruption protocol. Team owners will also be punished! The board is keeping an eye not just on outsiders but also on team owners and officials. Saikia said, ‘It has also been seen that some team owners and senior officials are mixing with the players in places where their entry is prohibited. We have taken this very seriously. We are issuing an advisory which will be strictly implemented. After this, if any violation occurs, BCCI and IPL management will take strict action. What is PMOA protocol? There have been strict rules regarding security in the past as well. BCCI has always been sensitive about the reputation of IPL. The role of the anti-corruption unit has increased after the 2013 spot-fixing scandal. A dedicated ACSU officer is deployed with each team, who keeps an eye on the activities of the players and the people they meet. The current report suggests that this time an attempt was made to breach the monitoring system, which the Board wants to stop at the initial stage.
