Bollywood actor Ali Fazal was recently seen in the crime thriller series ‘Rakh’. This 8 episode series was released on Prime Video on 12 June. It is inspired by the 1978 Ranga-Billa case in Delhi. Ali played the role of Sub-Inspector Jaiprakash Jatav in it. He had a special conversation with Dainik Bhaskar about his role and this series.

Question: What was the reason for saying yes to this series? answer: This story is very relevant in today’s time. However, its inspiration has been taken from an infamous case, which is still fresh in people’s minds. Delhi has changed a lot compared to that period, but many people of that time still meet and tell what happened then.

Recently someone told me that both the accused in that case were also seen in JVPD area of ​​Mumbai. This is what makes this matter more shocking. Also the question arises that how many such cases are happening today.

According to me, cinema is needed when people have to be made aware that what happened to one family should not happen to anyone else. At the same time, I found the character of Jaiprakash very interesting.

Question: What did you do to get into the character of Jaiprakash? answer: My entire team had a big contribution in creating this character. We all sat on this and did a lot of research and studied a lot. In the beginning we just read the scenes, then gradually we got into the world of the character. We tried to understand that if this was a person of that era, what would be his nature, what would be his habits.

The story is of the post-Emergency period, so there was a lot of discussion on how the police worked during that period. For example, at that time constables in Delhi were prohibited from wearing shorts. The language of the people was also quite strong and they mostly spoke in Hindi. According to me, it was very important to understand all these aspects deeply to get to the bottom of this character.

Question: What impact did this series have on the audience? answer: I am getting very different and interesting reactions from people. Usually in such stories, either only the criminal’s point of view or the police’s point of view is shown, but in this series a balance has been maintained between the two. For me, the most important thing about it is the ‘restriction of uniform’. When you wear a uniform, a limit is set on your work and you have to work within that limit.

People think that police have a lot of freedom, but the reality is not always like that. In this series, my character also looks like a common man, who tries to solve this case with full dedication and honesty. This is probably what is connecting the audience with him.

Question: How was the experience of shooting your web series ‘Rakh’? answer: According to me the shooting lasted for about one and a half to two months. It was the wish of our directors that we should shoot only at real locations and not create sets. So most of the shooting took place in real locations. We shot a lot in Agra and its surrounding areas.

After this worked in Mumbai and then the main shooting took place in Delhi. Interestingly, Delhi’s schedule was kept in March, when it is very hot there.

Question: In today’s time, is the story of the film taking center stage more than the star cast? answer: Yes, I completely agree with this. The day the story becomes the real hero of a film, the whole game will change. After that, if good actors are associated with that story, then things become even better. I believe that if the story is not strong, then the entire film cannot be sold just on the basis of a big name.

Question: What do you look for before choosing any project? answer: I choose any script very thoughtfully. This is the first show after ‘Mirzapur’ that I have chosen. For me, being a part of a series was a big step in itself, because in series the story is presented in more detail and depth than in films.

Many layers of the characters are revealed and a lot of hard work has to be done on that. That’s why while choosing any project, the first thing I look at is who is its maker. Along with this, I pay special attention to these three things: producer, director and story. When these three are strong, half the work becomes easier.
