Last year, a film based on him named ‘Caramelo’ was also released on Netflix. Not only this, recently a proposal to print them on the currency of Brazil was also made in the Parliament. Animal welfare activists in Mexico say that similar dogs are present in large numbers there too. He believes that the weather and history of both the countries have been largely similar. This is not just a dog of one country, but of the whole of Latin America. Interestingly, the debate is about identity, but the problem is much bigger. Even today, there are more than 20 million stray dogs in Brazil and more than 90% of them are Caramello. Despite their popularity, people often prefer exotic breeds when it comes to adoption. This is the reason why animal lovers of both the countries agree on one thing – whether Caramelo is from Brazil or Mexico, he should not be seen as just a ‘stray’, but as a companion who can get both a home and belonging. This unique breed of dog has been developed from 300 foreign species. From the scientific point of view, Caramello is not a dog of any pure breed. According to a study, these dogs are a mix of about 300 breeds. Dogs of different breeds arrived in Brazil with Portuguese colonists and later immigrants from Italy, Germany, Spain and Japan. This unique group developed from their combination. Being a mixed breed, the risk of genetic diseases is also relatively less.
