After Biden’s withdrawal from the US presidential election race, Kamala Harris of Indian origin is considered certain to become the candidate of the Democratic Party. Meanwhile, Kamala’s maternal village Thulasendrapuram in Tamil Nadu is filled with posters in her support.

Kamala Harris’s maternal grandfather PV Gopalan was a resident of this village. There is a banner with Kamala Harris’s picture outside a temple at the entrance of the village. As soon as Biden withdrew from the presidential race, worship started in this temple, which will continue till the voting day in America.

Hours after sunrise, M. Natarajan, the chief priest of the temple, performed a puja by offering sweets and rice pudding to the Hindu deity Dharmasastha. “We have performed puja for her earlier too and she became the vice-president of the United States. With the blessings of our Lord, she will become the president too,” the 61-year-old priest told news agency AFP.

The villagers hope that if Kamala Harris wins the election, she will definitely visit the village once.

Kamala Harris’ name among the donors of the temple
There is a list of donors on a wall of the temple. Kamala Harris’s name is also written on it. However, she never came to this village. The priest said that last time when she became the Vice President, we celebrated. Now that she will become the President, this celebration will be even bigger. We hope that she will definitely come to the village once as President.

A government employee living in the village told AFP that his village has benefited a lot because of Kamala Harris’s name being associated with it. A local bank donated Rs 1 crore to repair the village’s reservoir. This was possible only because of Harris.

People from the entire village donate items for worship and offerings at the temple. Harris’ maternal grandfather lived in this village decades ago. But the villagers said that even after his departure, his family always remained in touch. They have also been donating money for the maintenance of the temple and the village.

Shyamala is a breast cancer researcher who later moved from Tamil Nadu to America. Kamala’s father is Donald J. Harris of Jamaican-American origin. Shyamala and Donald were married in 1963.

Kamala Harris was born in 1964 and her sister Maya in 1966. After divorcing her father Donald in 1970, her mother Shyamala single-handedly raised Kamala and her sister Maya. Kamala married American lawyer Doug Emhoff in 2014.
