Actress Shabana Azmi mentioned a poem written for her by famous writer-poet Javed Akhtar and said that Javed Saheb no longer remembers that poem. Javed Akhtar expressed his views regarding success and failure. He said that one should not be proud of success and should not make failure a medal. Famous writer-poet Javed Akhtar and actress Shabana Azmi became a part of a special literary evening in Jaipur on Sunday. In the ‘Poetry and Conversation’ organized at Intercontinental Jaipur, Sitapura, Javed Akhtar presented his poems, shayari and songs in his own style, while Shabana Azmi translated his words into English and conveyed his feelings and thoughts to the audience. Many stories related to Javed Akhtar’s creative journey, struggle, writing and personal life also came to light in the programme. This event was organized by EHV International on the occasion of the arrival of Delhi’s famous restaurant ‘Chor Bazaar’ to Jaipur. This evening was a special opportunity for people associated with literature, cinema and art to listen closely to Javed Akhtar and Shabana Azmi. First, see the PHOTO’s of the event here… In the program ‘The fragrance flies somewhere in the translation’, Shabana Azmi said an interesting thing about the translation of Javed Akhtar’s poetry. He said that translation is like pouring a perfume from one bottle to another. While doing this, some of its fragrance evaporates. Therefore, presenting a poet’s work in another language is not an easy task. Despite this, Shabana translated Javed’s poems and poetry into English in such a way that the audience remained connected to the spirit and meaning of the original composition. On one side Javed Akhtar kept reading his works while on the other side Shabana Azmi kept explaining his words in English. The conversation and dialogue between the two transformed the program into a literary experience rather than just a poetry recitation. Javed Akhtar said that one should not be proud of one’s success and should not make one’s sorrow or failure a medal. We just have to be thankful for the life that we have got. ‘There is no romance even in a single bone of his body’ During the discussion of Javed Akhtar’s romantic songs and poetry, Shabana Azmi narrated a funny anecdote in her special style. He said that often people, especially women, tell him that if Javed Saheb writes such romantic things then he must be very romantic in real life too. Shabana jokingly said that there is no romance in even a single bone of her body. Javed Akhtar also immediately responded to this. He said that the person who hangs upside down in the circus does not necessarily hang upside down when he goes home. There was a lot of laughter among the audience at this altercation between Javed and Shabana. Shabana said that you see, she read so many poems here without even looking at the book and I don’t even remember the poem ‘Shabana’ has written for me. Javed Akhtar had reached Mumbai at the age of 19. During the program, Shabana Azmi also presented the struggle of Javed Akhtar’s life in front of the audience. He told that on October 4, 1964, a 19-year-old young man had reached Bombay Central Station. He had only 27 paise in his pocket, but he had big dreams in his eyes. Shabana told that Javed Akhtar saw many difficulties during the struggle in Mumbai. He spent nights on footpaths, railway stations and in the premises of many studios. There came a time when he had nothing to eat for three consecutive days and the clothes worn on his body were also torn and old. He said that in those times of despair when a person could have given up, Javed Akhtar told himself that he was not born just to die. These days will change. Shabana said that times have also changed. That 19 year old young man of October 4, 1964, who had almost nothing. Decades later, he was living a life that gave some of the most memorable words to India. Today is the same day of 4th October. ‘Difference in the style of writing of Gulzar and Javed’ Shabana Azmi also gave an interesting example of the writing style of Javed Akhtar and Gulzar. He told that once he had asked both Gulzar and Javed Akhtar to write something romantic. He told that Gulzar Sahab wrote – ‘Ja Ja Re Piya More Piya More, Mora Laage Na Jiya.’ At the same time, on the same tune, Javed Akhtar wrote – ‘I should not speak with words, O Ja Re Ja Re, Tu Na Mera Sanam, Tu Na Mera Piya.’ Shabana said that this is the difference in the style of speech of both of them. This is a great example of how two different creators present the same idea in their respective styles. Javed returned to the courtyard of memories with ‘Mera Aangan, Mera Ped’. Javed Akhtar also recited his famous poem ‘Mera Aangan, Mera Ped’ in the programme. In the name of childhood home, courtyard and that tree, he gave words to the vision and memories changing with age. Javed Akhtar also recited the poem ‘Woh Kamra Yaad Aata Hai’. In this he remembered that room, which hides within itself a person who has returned from the sunshine, fatigue and struggle of life, like his mother. Javed Akhtar also looked at life and victory and defeat from a different perspective through the poem ‘Yeh Khel Kya Hai’. Looking at the black and white pieces, he questions that if these are just wooden toys then what is there to win and what to lose. The story of Dadar and the hope of one thousand rupees: Javed Akhtar narrated another interesting story related to the struggle of his life. He told that once during the days of struggle, he had gone to Dadar to collect a fee of one thousand rupees. There was very little money in the pocket and on reaching the producer’s office where we had to go, we found that the office was locked. At that time, the big question before him was whether to buy a train ticket to return home or eat something with the remaining money. He was hungry, so he bought gram on the way and decided to return from Dadar to Bandra on foot. During this time, he took a resolution from himself that one day he would pass through this route in his car. This dream seen during the period of struggle later came true. Javed Akhtar told that after almost four decades, when he was passing through the same area with his daughter Zoya Akhtar, he told Zoya the same story of his struggling days. He told how he never had any money and had decided to walk from Dadar to Bandra. After listening to him, Zoya replied in such a funny manner that he himself became speechless. Zoya told him that at that time even gram worth 20 paise would have been available in abundance. ::::::::::::::::::: My courtyard, my tree, how beautiful my courtyard was, how big it was in which all my games could be accommodated and in front of the courtyard, there was a tree which was much taller than me but I was sure of it that when I grow up, I will even touch the top of this tree, after years I have returned home, I see how small this courtyard is, the tree is but a little taller than before, I remember that room whenever I go in my life. Whenever I would swelter in the scorching sun, tired of the lies of others and myself, after fighting with everyone and giving up on myself, whenever I would go to that one room, that one room of light and dark brown colors, that very kind room which would hide me in its soft embrace like a mother hides a child in her lap, scold me with love, what is this habit of wandering around in the burning afternoon:::::::::::::::::::::: I remember that room, Dabeej and That rosewood door that opened with a little difficulty, as if an arrogant father had hidden an ocean of compassion in his rough chest, that chair and the twin sister with it, those two of his friends were my friends, that insolent, outspoken mirror which was good at heart, that clumsy wardrobe that used to look at the mirror like an old Anna standing in the corner, that one tiny vase, a lot of devils would have laughed at those days. There was the carpet or a smile full of madness, and that vine leaning on the carpet, was looking at the books and was sitting on the shelf with a serious hand, but everyone was waiting for this thing.
