BJP Rajya Sabha MP and former Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Dinesh Sharma has been appointed as the new Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Rashtrapati Bhavan informed about his appointment late Saturday night. A release issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan said, ‘The President of India has appointed Dr. Dinesh Sharma as the Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. His appointment will be effective from the date on which he assumes charge.
Has been Deputy CM of UP Dinesh Sharma
Dinesh Sharma is a well-known face of Uttar Pradesh politics. He has also been the Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. In 2017, after the formation of BJP government under the leadership of Yogi Adityanath in Uttar Pradesh, he was made the Deputy Chief Minister. After this Dinesh Sharma was sent to Rajya Sabha.

62-year-old Dinesh Sharma is currently a member of Rajya Sabha and his tenure was to end on November 25. He has also been included in the Deputy Chairman Panel of Rajya Sabha. Professor in Lucknow University
Dinesh Sharma was born on 12 January 1964 in Lucknow. His father Kedar Nath Sharma was associated with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Jan Sangh. Dinesh Sharma studied from Lucknow University and later taught there also. He joined Lucknow University in 1992 and was a professor in the Department of Commerce.
Dinesh Sharma was associated with politics since his student days. He started his political journey through RSS affiliated student organization Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Later he was also active in Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha.
Became mayor of Lucknow twice
The big milestone in Dinesh Sharma’s political career came in 2006, when he was elected Mayor of Lucknow. After this, in 2012 he again contested the mayor’s election and won. In this election, he defeated his nearest rival Neeraj Bora of Congress by more than 1.71 lakh votes.
After BJP’s victory in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, his stature further increased in the party organization. In August 2014, he was made the National Vice President of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Became Deputy CM in Yogi government
Yogi Adityanath took oath as the Chief Minister after BJP got majority in the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. On 19 March 2017, Dinesh Sharma was made the Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh along with Keshav Prasad Maurya.
At that time Dinesh Sharma was not an elected member of the Assembly. Later in September 2017, he was elected member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council. In the first term of the Yogi government, he was the Deputy Chief Minister and had the responsibility of important departments including education.
After this he was sent to Rajya Sabha. Now the President has appointed Dinesh Sharma as the Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. His appointment will be effective from the date of assuming office.
