Rakhi Sawant gets relief in 2010 suicide case as court cancels warrant

Actor Rakhi Sawant received relief in a 16-year-old case linked to the suicide of a man who appeared on her television show Justice for Rakhi in November 2010. A court in Jhansi on Thursday cancelled the non-bailable warrant issued against her on October 16, after her lawyer submitted an earlier High Court order directing that no coercive action be taken against her.

According to advocate Asu Singh, who is representing the actor, the High Court’s order had not been placed on record before the lower court during the previous hearing. This, he said, led to the issuance of the non-bailable warrant.

During Thursday’s hearing, the earlier order was presented before the court. After taking it on record, the court cancelled the warrant and directed that it be withdrawn with immediate effect.

The development offers Sawant relief from the warrant, but it does not mean that the entire case has been closed. Further judicial proceedings in the matter are expected to continue.

What was the case?

A man named Lakshman Ahirwar, who was from the Prem Nagar area of Jhansi, had appeared on the show with his wife to discuss a marital dispute. During the programme, Sawant called him impotent while attempting to address the couple’s disagreement.

The man later died by suicide.

Lakshman’s mother, Savitri, later filed a complaint at the Prem Nagar police station. She alleged that Sawant had used insulting and objectionable language against her son during an episode of Justice for Rakhi aired in October 2010. Lakshman’s family alleged that he slipped into depression after the episode and claimed that he later drank himself to death.

Meanwhile, Justice for Rakhi addressed personal and social issues through disputes brought before Sawant, with the show often featuring dramatic confrontations.
