Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has applied to trademark her voice to protect it from misuse. His move is to avoid the threat of AI deepfakes. Meloni has made this application in the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). Along with the application, Meloni has submitted an audio recording of about 4 seconds. In this she says twice in Italian – Lo sono Georgia i.e. I am Giorgia Meloni. Meloni’s 2021 autobiography was also titled Lo Sono Georgia. This sentence is also related to his political campaign. Meloni is the first world leader to trademark her voice. How does AI imitate voice? Many artists have already taken such a step. With the increasing use of AI, voice has also become a part of digital identity, which artists are looking for legal ways to protect. Meloni isn’t the first big celebrity to trademark her voice. Many artists of the world have already tried to get legal protection for the rights related to their voice, name and identity. In January, American actor Matthew McConaughey applied to trademark his image and voice. In August, more than 80 artists had asked the then British Prime Minister Andy Burnham to enact a law that would give people legal rights to use their voice. Taylor Swift got 2 voice samples trademarked. In April, singer Taylor Swift also filed three trademark applications in America. Of these, one application is related to his picture and two applications are related to his voice. The photo application uses a photo taken onstage during Swift’s Eras Tour. In this, she is seen holding a pink guitar and wearing bright clothes. The same picture has previously been used in the promotion of the film Eras Tour. Two other applications are related to his voice. These include two short audios recorded to promote their earlier albums. In these recordings she introduces herself, saying “Hey, it’s Taylor” and “Hey, it’s Taylor Swift.” Melonie has been a victim of deepfake before too. Deepfake is not a new problem for Melonie. In 2024, fake obscene videos were made using her photo and spread on the internet. After this, Meloni had demanded damages of 1 lakh euros against those who made and spread the video. Even in May this year, Meloni had expressed concern about the threat of deepfakes. At that time, fake pictures of her in undergarments created by AI were spreading on the internet. Meloni had said regarding this that this problem is not only theirs. According to him, deepfake is a technology which can be used to deceive someone, tarnish his image or target him. She also said that she can defend herself, but many people do not have the means to do so. —————————–
