Manoj Bajpayee’s ‘Governor’ is releasing on June 12. In the interview, director Chinmay Mandlekar shared special things about the film’s research, characters and references… The film is now ready to be released in front of the audience, there is a special excitement in the entire team. Chinmay says… We were working on ‘Governor’ for a long time and now that the film is nearing its release, there is a different kind of excitement in the entire team. Manoj Bajpayee is campaigning across the country. When you work hard on a story for years and it finally reaches the audience, there is a feeling of both responsibility and satisfaction. ‘It is not like a documentary, it is an economic thriller based on complete research… According to Chinmay…’ The basis of the film is completely based on real incidents, information about which is available in the public domain. However, we also had to keep in mind that we are not making a documentary. The results of many big decisions are recorded in history, but to reach those decisions, complete information about what discussions took place in closed rooms, what differences and pressures had to be faced, is not available anywhere. In such a situation, we imagined those situations on the basis of extensive research and gave them a cinematic form. Our effort was to maintain a balance between facts and drama. ‘Conversations with families and documents strengthened the film’s research. Chinmay says, ‘We did not rely only on reports or published content. Our team also talked to those people and families who were associated with that period and events in some way or the other. The writer and co-producers communicated with him at different stages of the script. We had to understand the real circumstances and the intentions behind the decisions. ‘This is not a biopic of any one person, it is the story of an entire era. Chinmay said that ‘Many people ask whether ‘Governor’ is a biopic, so I clearly say that it is not. This is not the story of one person’s life. This is the story of a period when the country was going through one of the most difficult phases of economic crisis. Due to circumstances, some characters definitely come to the center of the story but the film is not limited to them only. There are many characters in it who influenced the decisions and events of that period. Many characters of the film have been created by combining 2-3 real people. According to Chinmay, ‘If we had presented each real person separately, the story would have become very complex. Therefore, some characters are created that represent the experiences and roles of 2 or 3 real personalities. Especially through journalists and other supporting characters, we tried to bring forward the thinking, pressure and public discussion of that time. Manoj has presented the personality of S. Venkataramanan with full dignity. Chinmay explains… ‘Some institutions and names have been changed in the film for creative reasons but the soul of the character from whom the story is inspired has been presented with complete honesty. Manoj relied on the available documents, script and his studies instead of meeting S Venkataramanan’s family for this role.
