After the uproar and vandalism on Sunday night at Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Phagwara, Punjab, a large number of students were seen leaving the hostel and leaving for their homes on Monday morning. Students say that after suspending classes for 10 days, the university has given them the option to go home. Mid term exams have also been cancelled. The students also narrated their ordeal.
Students said – there was a lot of damage to the class and building.
A student leaving the campus with a bag and suitcase said that at present the situation inside is calm. He said, ‘Everything is fine now and there is no ruckus going on. We have received notice that the college will remain closed for 10 days. If you want, you can go home, that’s why students are leaving. However, students say that due to the vandalism that took place on Sunday night, there is doubt whether the situation will be completely normal in 10 days. A student claimed that there was vandalism and arson in the Computer Science building. There has been considerable damage in other parts of the campus as well.
‘Fearful of the violence, the students started crying’
The student said that the students living in the hostel were very scared due to the events of Sunday night. According to him, as the situation worsened, the girl students were also scared and were calling their friends and brothers. Later the police took charge of the situation, after which the students felt relieved.
Students said that the incident has had a direct impact on their studies. Midterm examinations were going on and papers were to be held in the coming days, but now the examinations have been postponed. Classes are also closed for the next 10 days. It is not yet clear to the students whether they will be called back after 10 days or their studies will be conducted online.
Describing the situation on Sunday night, a student said that after the commotion increased, the girl students present in the hostel were very scared. ‘The girls were crying. She was calling her brothers and friends to save us somehow. For this reason the boys also came out. According to the student, later the police covered the campus, after which the situation calmed down and the students felt safe.

Cab-autos are not available, students are worried
Students returning home are also facing the problem of transport. Students claim that cabs and autos are not easily available in the morning and higher fares are being demanded than on normal days. A student leaving the campus said that the situation on Sunday night has scared everyone.
He said that many kinds of things and rumors are going on regarding the alleged incident and the actual things are not known. ‘For now we want to stay safe. The vandalism that happened inside is not right. Demonstration can also be done in a peaceful manner.
Some students alleged that during the uproar, outsiders and locals also entered the campus and took advantage of the situation and carried out vandalism. According to the students, shops in the University Mall were damaged. However, these claims of the students have not been independently verified.
Outsiders involved in violence and vandalism
A student also claimed that most of the outsiders were involved in the violence and vandalism and that many students tried to stop them from damaging property. He said that University Mall, Computer Science Building and Admission Block were damaged. He also claimed that some trophies won by the students were also broken.
Students say that there is confusion in the campus regarding the claim of alleged sexual harassment. According to him, the university administration is calling it a rumour, while some of the protesting students are demanding investigation into the allegations and clarification of the situation. The students said that their biggest priority at the moment is safety and it may take some time for studies to return to normal after Sunday night’s incidents.
