Amidst the ongoing tussle over the Election Commission, big leaders of the INDIA block will gather in Delhi on Wednesday. The objective is to decide the common strategy of the opposition on election issues. But even before the meeting started, questions have been raised on opposition unity. Some parties have distanced themselves from the meeting, while some have decided to send representatives. BJP has also got an opportunity to target the opposition.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge in the meeting, Rahul GandhiAICC general secretary Jairam Ramesh and KC Venugopal, TMC’s Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee, RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav.
And leaders of parties like SP, CPI, CPI(M), NCP(SP) and Shiv Sena (UBT) will be included.
But the opposition leaders who are not participating are being discussed more than the leaders who are participating.
On one hand DMK and AAP have made it clear that they will not be a part of the meeting, while on the other hand SP chief Akhilesh Yadav Will also not be in this. Uddhav Thackeray from Shiv Sena will also not be in it.
Akhilesh is deliberately not sending any big leader?
Akhilesh has cited nomination for Rajya Sabha elections in UP as the reason. Also said about sending a representative. When asked about Yadav not coming to the meeting, Venugopal said, ‘I spoke to Akhilesh Yadav, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also spoke to him. He has to look after the nomination work for Rajya Sabha elections, but his party leaders are attending the meeting.
Now, instead of sending any big face to the INDIA block meeting, SP will include Mohibullah Nadvi and Harendra Malik. It is believed that Akhilesh Yadav has chosen this method of expressing his displeasure with Congress. Akhilesh Yadav is angry with the statements of Imran Masood and Congress’ UP in-charge Rajendra Pal Gautam regarding alliance and seat sharing and it is being considered as a strategy to put pressure on Congress.
According to party sources, Akhilesh Yadav deliberately chose today’s day for the nomination of Ram Gopal Yadav, so that Ram Gopal Yadav could not go to this meeting along with him. Along with this, neither Dharmendra Yadav or Dimple Yadav is being sent to this meeting.
DMK said- are part of opposition, not of INDIA block
DMK has distanced itself from it. On the INDIA alliance meeting, DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan said, ‘Other opposition parties oppose BJP, we will also stand with them. But that doesn’t mean we are together. We are not part of the INDIA block. However, he said that even if we are not part of the INDIA alliance, we will support whoever brings the proposal to remove Gyanesh Kumar in the Parliament.
The relationship between DMK and Congress broke down after the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Because after the elections, Congress supported actor-leader Vijay’s party ‘Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam’ (TVK). DMK called this move a betrayal and subsequently stayed away from the INDIA Block meeting held in June. DMK leaders say that the party is a part of the opposition, but is no longer a part of the Congress-led INDIA block.
The path of AAP and Congress is also different
While Arvind Kejriwal Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will not have it. Because after relations with Congress deteriorated over election contests in Delhi and Punjab, AAP formally walked out of the INDIA alliance in July 2025.
Both the parties had contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections together in Delhi, Haryana and Gujarat, but they remained rivals of each other in Punjab. The differences between them had further increased after they fought the 2024 Haryana Assembly elections and 2025 Delhi Assembly elections separately.
Uddhav Thackeray will not come to Delhi
Uddhav Thackeray will not come to Delhi and attend this meeting. He told that he will attend the meeting of INDIA alliance virtually. It is being told that Uddhav is busy preparing for the demonstration to be held in Mumbai on October 4. This protest of Shiv Sena will be against the Election Commission, Raj Thackeray’s party is also with it.
What is the agenda of India Block meeting?
In the meeting, the leaders will decide the strategy of joint movement regarding the alleged irregularities in the SIR process. Besides, there will also be a discussion on the demand for resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
According to sources, a new effort is being made to bring a resolution in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to remove Gyanesh Kumar. Draft notice is ready for this. There can be a discussion on approving this notice in the meeting.
The last meeting of INDIA block was held on 8 June. Emphasizing unity against the BJP, the members of the INDIA block had unanimously decided that they would demand the resignation of the then Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET-CBSE controversy and write a letter to the Chief Justice of India on the issue of SIR process and ‘vote loot’.
