The picture of poet Rabindranath Tagore was blackened in Bangladesh. The incident took place today near Khulna railway station. Some posters were also put up near Tagore’s photo, in which it was written that anti-Muslim Tagore has no place here. This incident has happened at a time when protests against India have been going on in Bangladesh for some time. Some protesters are also accusing Tagore of opposing the establishment of Dhaka University. This incident happened before the visit of Prime Minister Tariq Rehman. Prime Minister Tariq Rehman is going to visit Khulna city. Due to this, the local administration had got these pictures made on the wall of the railway station. Apart from Tagore, there were portraits of many well-known personalities including Fakir Lalan Shah, Kazi Nazrul Islam, artist SM Sultan and former President Ziaur Rehman. Pictures related to Sundarban, 60-domed mosque and jute industry were also made on the wall. But the protesters blackened Tagore’s picture only. Why were Tagore accused of being anti-Muslim? First reason- Partition of Bengal in 1905. The British government divided Bengal into two parts. Muslim population was more in East Bengal, while Hindu population was more in West Bengal. Tagore had opposed this partition. He participated in programs like tying Rakhi to unite the people of Bengal and wrote the song ‘Amar Sonar Bangla’. But many Muslims of East Bengal did not seem to be benefiting from this movement. He hoped that the new province would give him more opportunities in administration and education. Therefore some Muslim leaders supported partition. Tagore’s opposition was later presented by some as an opposition to the political interests of Muslims. Whereas his protest was against dividing Bengal on the basis of religion. Second reason- Accusation of opposing Dhaka University. Tagore is also accused that he had opposed the opening of Dhaka University in 1912. Critics say that Tagore feared that the establishment of a new university in Dhaka would reduce the educational influence of Kolkata. The British had divided Bengal in 1905. Under this, a separate province was created by combining East Bengal and Assam. Muslim population was high in East Bengal. After this, when the proposal to establish Dhaka University came, some leaders of Kolkata felt that this would lead to another partition of Bengal. His argument was that the creation of a separate university could increase the distance between the Hindu and Muslim communities of Bengal. However, there is no historical evidence to support Tagore’s opposition to Dhaka University. Historians have also declared this to be wrong. 3 attacks on Tagore’s legacy in 18 months April 2025, Kumarkhali, Kushtia: Black ink was smeared on a picture of Tagore on a wall.
