CM Suvendu Adhikari giving information about the decision to hand over the land in Kolkata on Wednesday.
West Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday handed over 27 km of land on the India-Bangladesh border to BSF. Fencing and security structure will be built on it. Suvendu said that the framework of Detect, Delete and Deport should be adopted for infiltrators.
CM Suvendu said in the meeting held in Kolkata to give land to BSF that this is just the beginning. This land will be handed over in two weeks. In future, wherever land is required for border security, the state government will make it available to BSF. The official said that out of the state’s 2200 km long international border, about 1600 km has been fenced, while about 600 km is still without fencing.

CM said that to strengthen the border security, it is necessary to complete the fencing work quickly. Meanwhile, Suvendu Adhikari alleged that the previous government did not give land to BSF because of “vote bank politics and appeasement”.
Those who do not come under the purview of CAA will be considered infiltrators.
The CM officer also said that coordination meetings between BSF, state police and district administration were not taking place in the border districts for the last several years. Now these meetings have been resumed and further meetings will be held regularly.
Suvendu talked about adopting a strict stance on the issue of illegal infiltration. He said that now the state police will directly hand over the caught infiltrators to BSF. The central government had sent a letter to the state in this regard last year, but the previous government did not implement it.
He said, “Those who do not come under the ambit of CAA, they will be considered as infiltrators. The state police will arrest them and hand them over to BSF.” He also said that such people will be deported later.
This decision is being considered as part of a larger initiative to strengthen the border management and security system.
Bengal shares 2216 km border with Bangladesh.
India shares a 4,097 km long border with Bangladesh. According to the Union Home Ministry, about 3,240 km of the border has been fenced and about 850 km, including 175 km of inaccessible terrain, is yet to be fenced.
The CM official claimed that out of the proposed 127 km stretch, only about 8 km was fenced during the tenure of Mamata Banerjee’s government.
West Bengal shares about 2,216 km long international border with Bangladesh. This is the longest state border of India-Bangladesh.
In 2021, the central government increased the jurisdiction of BSF on the border in Bengal from 15 km to 50 km. That means BSF can search, arrest and seize in an area up to 50 km.
The then Mamta government had called it interference in the affairs of the state. A resolution against it was also passed in the Bengal Assembly in December 2021.
