Scientists of CSIR (Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute) located in Kolkata, the capital of Bengal, are making the country’s first bullet proof glass ceramic panel. Even a bullet from an AK-47 rifle will not be able to penetrate it. Dr. Atiyar Rahman, senior scientist of Specialty Glass Division, who developed this technology in the country, says – We have been working on this technology for 2-3 years.

He says- The glass ceramic panel has passed the test of single shot bullet of AK-47 from a distance of 10 meters at the Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory of Chandigarh DRDO. Now we have to test with multiple bullets. We have also applied for its patent.

Director of the institute, Vikramjit Basu says – It can be used in everything from defense to space missions. The special thing is that we are the only manufacturers of glass ceramics in the world. Therefore it can be exported to other countries.

Benefits… Speed ​​of vehicles will increase with less fuel

Dr. Atiyar explains, we are making such a material from window glass, due to which nano crystals (10-15 mm) are being generated in the glass. The hardness of ordinary glass is 5 GPa. It will have 10 GPA. This will not increase the weight of the vehicles, which will increase the speed. Fuel consumption will decrease. The price will also be same.
