676 families are living in plastic tents in the no man’s land between India and Bangladesh.

In Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has intensified the campaign against Bangladeshi infiltrators under the ‘Three D Policy’ i.e. ‘Detect, Delete and Deport’. In June, 676 houses in Hasila Bill area of Goalpara district were demolished with just two days’ notice.

The government claims that these people were illegal immigrants settled on government land, but local citizens say that they are Indians, they have NRC of 1951 and documents before 1971.

Victim Sona Bano of Barpeta district says- I was left in no-man’s land (the area between India-Bangladesh) on May 25 along with 13 other people. She lived among insects and jokes for two days, then was sent to Bangladesh jail and later returned to India. I have always been in India, now I have to prove my citizenship.

At the same time, opposition leader Debabrata Saikia of Congress alleges that the BJP government has failed to send back Bangladeshis. Only 26 people were deported since 2016. The rest happened during the Congress government. Pushback is not legal. People either return or get stuck in Bangladesh jail.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is bypassing the law in the name of ‘pushback policy’. Government records show that only 26 people were legally deported in the six years between 2017 and 2023, but the Chief Minister claims that in the last one month, 147 people have been pushed back (ie kept in no man’s land). Controversy over this policy arose when some Indian citizens from Delhi and Assam were mistakenly deported to Bangladesh, including a pregnant woman and children.
