US President Donald Trump has left for Japan from Malaysia. He will discuss trade and investment deals with Japanese PM Sanae Takaichi today. Before this, Trump last visited Japan in 2019.
According to media reports, 18,000 policemen are deployed in Tokyo. Traffic has been stopped on Trump’s route and air space is also closed. This is Japan’s largest security operation since 2002.
A major reason for this is the deadly attacks on two former PMs of Japan in the last 5 years. In July 2022, former PM Shinzo Abe was shot dead, while in April 2023, an explosive was thrown during the speech of then PM Fumio Kishida.
Japan promised investment of Rs 46 lakh crore
Japan has already promised to invest Rs 46 lakh crore in America. Its details will be decided during Trump’s visit.
Trump wants Japan to invest money in America in sectors like chips, medicines, ships and energy. This will increase jobs in America and strengthen the relations between the two countries.
Some people are also opposing Trump’s visit. People raised slogans of Trump go back at Shimbashi station in Tokyo. They are angry with his policies.
Before Trump’s visit, a demonstration was held by hanging his poster upside down.
Trump and Takaichi spoke on the phone two days ago
Trump and PM Takaichi spoke on the phone on Saturday. This conversation was of 10 minutes. Both promised to further improve the US-Japan alliance. Takaichi had said that this is most important for me.
Takaichi wrote on X- Had a good talk with Trump. Thanks for his congratulations. I will further strengthen our alliance with him. He asked Trump for help for Japanese people kidnapped by North Korea and also talked about the situation in West Asia.
Trump had previously praised Takaichi, calling him intelligent and strong. However, Trump’s relationship with other leaders often changes. At the same time, Takaichi’s Liberal Democratic Party does not have a majority in Parliament, which may make it difficult for them to work with Trump.
Trump wants Japan to increase its security spending
Trump wants Japan to spend more money on its military. Takaichi had said on Friday that Japan will increase its defense budget to 2% of the country’s GDP. This decision is a major change in Japan’s security policy.
Takaichi did not say much about business. She told that she will try to reduce the impact of American tariffs. According to an agreement signed in July, Japan will give 15% tariff to America and invest $550 billion there. Takaichi said she would look at the deal carefully, especially the terms of the investment.
Japan’s purchase of gas from Russia will also be discussed in today’s meeting. America asked Japan to stop it, but Japan refused to do so citing its own interests. Takaichi is considered a student of former PM Shinzo Abe. Abe and Trump had a very good relationship. This may be beneficial for Takaichi.
Trump will meet Chinese President in South Korea
After Japan, Trump will reach South Korea. Where he will participate in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. Here he will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Trump wants to make a trade deal with China to end the trade war. The agreement includes the purchase of American soybeans, lifting of restrictions on rare earth minerals and controls on raw materials for drugs such as fentanyl.
The US had imposed a 10% tariff on China in February 2025, which increased to 145% by April. Trump feels that this deal will further strengthen his image as a “great dealmaker”.
Before Trump reached Malaysia, senior US and Chinese officials held trade talks in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday. The world’s two largest economies are trying to stop a trade war and get Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping to meet at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea next week.
The conversation took place after Trump threatened to impose 100% taxes on Chinese goods from November 1 and tighten other trade rules. This threat came after China banned the export of certain minerals and magnets.
