America has banned the import of humanoid and quadruped robots coming from other countries including China. America’s Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has cited national security and cyber security risks behind this decision. This ban will apply only to those robots that have not yet reached America. Robots already in use will not come under the purview of this decision. China has reacted strongly to this decision. The Chinese Embassy in Washington alleged that America is targeting Chinese companies without any evidence. China said it will take necessary retaliatory measures to protect its interests. Why did America ban foreign robots? America believes that if the use of robots of foreign companies in the essential services of the country increases, then the threat to national security may increase. The government fears that in case of any dispute or tension, the supply of these robots may be affected. Apart from this, power grid, communication network and other important systems can also be targeted through cyber attacks. This decision has come at a time when the race between America and China to gain edge in AI, robotics and other advanced technologies is intense. America wants its dependence on foreign companies to reduce for important future technologies and domestic companies to become stronger. Why will China be affected the most? The ban will apply to all foreign companies, but its biggest impact is expected to be on China. The reason is that China has today become the world’s largest robot manufacturer and largest market. In 2024, China installed 2.95 lakh industrial robots in its factories, while America installed only 34,200 robots. That means China installed about 9 times more robots than America. At present, more than 20 lakh industrial robots are working in China’s factories, whereas in America their number is about 3.94 lakh. Most industrial robots used in America come from Japan and Europe. But China has rapidly moved to the forefront in the field of humanoid robots. Last year, America was the largest foreign buyer of humanoid robots made in China. How far ahead is China in humanoid robots? Experts say the US still holds the lead in developing the most advanced AI models. However, China has introduced many new AI models in a short period of time and made a huge leap in the production of AI-powered humanoid robots. According to AP, about 85% of humanoid robots deployed in the world are from China. Morgan Stanley estimates that China’s humanoid robot market could be worth $15 billion by 2030. According to research firm Omdia, about 15 thousand humanoid robots will be sent across the world in 2025. Among these, China’s Unitri and AGIbot alone supplied more than 5 thousand robots each. In comparison, American companies Tesla and Figure AI could send only a few hundred robots.
