19 Iranian ships are stranded in international waters off the coast of Sri Lanka. There is a shortage of food items, water and fuel on these ships. Despite this, the Sri Lankan government is currently avoiding helping them. The government fears that providing aid to Iranian ships could risk US sanctions. Sri Lanka says it will keep its national interests in mind before taking any decision. According to Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry spokesperson Thushara Rodrigo, these ships are standing about 24 nautical miles away from the country’s coast. However, Sri Lanka has not yet received any official warning from the US that action will be taken against it if it helps Iranian ships. The ships stranded in Hormuz following the US blockade Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath told the Sunday Times that these are Iranian oil tankers. According to him, since the resumption of the US naval blockade in Hormuz, dozens of Iranian ships are stranded and are unable to return to their country. The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea. A large part of the supplies from the world’s major oil producing countries passes through this sea route. This decision is not easy for Sri Lanka due to its business relations with both America and Iran. The country is currently trying to recover from the economic crisis and both America and Iran are its trading partners. America played an important role in providing relief package to Sri Lanka from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) during the economic crisis. Efforts were also made with the help of America to rescue the agricultural sector from the food crisis. According to Sri Lankan officials, companies providing goods and other services to ships are cautious about the possible threat of US sanctions. In such a situation, the government has to balance between humanitarian needs and its relations with America. Sri Lanka has already provided help to the Iranian ship. About seven months ago, the Iranian naval ship IRIS Dena was sunk in an American torpedo attack. 87 Iranian sailors were killed in this incident. The ship was returning to its country after taking part in a naval exercise organized at the invitation of India. After this, another Iranian ship was brought to the Sri Lankan port due to technical fault. Her injured sailors were treated in Sri Lankan hospitals. The people rescued from the ship and the injured sailors were later safely flown to Iran. Expert said – it is a moral responsibility to provide help in case of attack International affairs expert Dayan Jayathilake said that Sri Lanka is in a difficult situation and there are practical limits to helping it. According to him, the world should understand that Sri Lanka is not deliberately refusing aid, but it has to take the decision carefully. Jayatilleke said that these were not warships, but cargo ships, which used to carry oil from Iran to China. If these ships are attacked and they come to Sri Lankan waters for help, it will be the country’s moral responsibility to provide them immediate assistance. ——————– Read this news also….
