Sanjay Roy had raped and murdered a trainee doctor in Lal Ghere on August 9, 2024. He was sentenced to life imprisonment on January 20, 2025.
The body of the 11-year-old niece of Sanjay Roy, convicted of rape and murder at Kolkata’s famous R Kar Medical College, was found hanging from the cupboard in his house on Monday. On Tuesday, an angry mob attacked the girl’s father and stepmother in Bhawanipur area of Kolkata.
Police said that after the death of the girl, her father Bhola Singh and his second wife Pooja were trying to run away from their house. Then the neighbors surrounded them and attacked them. People beat the father with shoes. The stepmother was dragged by her hair and beaten.
Local people accused both of them of physically and mentally torturing the girl. Tension flared up in the area, following which police reached the spot and rescued the couple from angry neighbors and took them to Alipore police station.
The girl’s body was hanging from a hanger inside the cupboard. A piece of cloth was tied around his neck.
Father married aunt after mother’s suicide Police said that Bhola had earlier married Sanjay Roy’s elder sister Babita. The deceased girl was their only child. Babita committed suicide a few years ago. After this Bhola married Sanjay’s younger sister Pooja.
Bhola’s daughter was a fifth class student. On Monday, his body was found hanging from a hanger inside a cupboard. A piece of cloth was tied around his neck. According to the claim, her stepmother was out of the house. When she returned home, she found the girl in the same condition. The girl was taken to SSKM Hospital, where she was declared dead.
Neighbors said – they used to throw the girl out of the house at 2 o’clock in the night Neighbors alleged that the father and stepmother often abused the girl physically and mentally. A neighbor alleged that the girl was often thrown out of the house at night, even at 2 am. She was deeply shocked by this.
The girl’s grandmother alleged that her father and stepmother used to beat her with belts and bang her head on walls. According to the police, preliminary investigation has indicated suicide. However, the possibility of murder is not being ruled out. The post mortem and forensic reports are awaited to find out the exact cause of death.

The court had convicted Sanjay on January 18, 2025. On January 20, 2025, he was sentenced to life imprisonment. CBI and the victim’s family had sought death penalty. There was anger across the country including Kolkata regarding this incident. Medical services were at a standstill in Bengal for more than 2 months.

NCRB said that in 2023, 4 lakh 48 thousand 211 cases related to crimes against women were registered, in which the highest cases were ‘cruelty by husband or relative’, ‘kidnapping’, ‘rape’ and ‘molestation’.
