‘You Discover Errors 2 Months After?’: UGC-NET Re-Exam Announcement Leaves Students Furious
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced a re-examination for candidates who appeared for UGC-NET June 2026 in English, Commerce and Sociology after receiving several complaints about “multiple errors” in the question papers.
In an official notice, NTA said it constituted a committee to examine the complaints and, based on the committee’s recommendations, decided to re-conduct the examinations “to ensure a fair and error-free examination.”
The re-examination will be held in September. English candidates will appear on September 9 in Shift 1, while Commerce candidates will take the re-test on September 9 in Shift 2. Sociology candidates will appear on September 10 in Shift 1.
NTA has said candidates will not have to pay any additional examination fee. It has also clarified that results for the other 84 subjects will be declared as scheduled and that the allocation of seats will not be reduced.
The announcement, however, has triggered anger among candidates who say they have already spent weeks preparing for the examination, travelled to centres and incurred expenses.
One comment summed up the frustration: “what kinda organisation is this. ? So many issues keep raising….no accountability? Day to day functioning and attention to detail is very important. Requires serious introspection and overhauling.”

Another candidate questioned NTA’s decision not to charge an additional fee, writing: “No additional costs… Seriously?? You idiots should be the ones refunding the exam fees along with the travel and accommodation expenses we had to incur, infact you should be the ones giving out TA too, it wasn’t our incompetence that led to this.”
For some candidates, the re-examination also creates practical difficulties. One Commerce candidate said they appeared for the June 24 exam but suffered an accident on July 31 and underwent surgery for a fractured leg.
“I wrote the UGC NET Commerce- June 24, 2026 exam afternoon shift 3 PM-6PM. I had an accident on July 31, 2026 and fracture in my left leg. I underwent ORIF surgery the next day. Now I am under bedrest. How can I attend the re-exam? Please reply.”

Another candidate questioned the timing of the decision, saying: “NTA, if you can’t manage exams properly, hand them back to central universities. After 45+ days of denying paper leaks while we waited for answer keys, you released 84 subjects yesterday, only to drop a 9 PM notice canceling the rest due to “technical and spelling errors.””
Not everyone was critical of the re-test. One candidate urged others to focus on preparation instead, writing: “All the students… Retest will happen.. We all know history… So just don’t waste time and start preparing. As everyone is saying consider it revision.. Mental peace is most important at this point.. Stay calm and study.. So am I.”
Another angry comment read: “Seriously you’re playing with students time as well as there life too. It’s your job to create a fair education system but now it seems that everywhere is your mismanagement.”
A further comment questioned how the errors were identified so late: “Another livid example of high standards. You discover errors in questions 2 mo after it was conducted? And then ask students to reappear in 2 weeks approx because of your lapses?”

The announcement has also drawn a political response from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who criticised the NTA and questioned its accountability.
“Modi ji, look at what your NTA has just done.” Rahul Gandhi said UGC-NET exams for Sociology, English and Commerce were held between June 22 and 30 and alleged that thousands of candidates would now have to repeat the process.
“NTA makes the mistake but the student serves the sentence.” He further questioned whether the papers had been leaked before the examination and called for accountability from NTA leadership.
The re-examination dates announced by NTA are September 9 for English and Commerce, and September 10 for Sociology. Candidates have been advised to rely only on official NTA communications for further details.
