Nearly a month before the Asian Games 2026, India have received a setback with Greco-Roman wrestler Deepanshu being reportedly suspended by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA). Deepanshu made the Asiad cut for the 130kg class after winning the trials held in Lucknow earlier this year.
According to a report in The Times Of IndiaDeepanshu tested positive for the prohibited anabolic steroid stanozolol.
This is the second time that Deepanshu has failed a dope test, having earlier served a three-year ban for the same substance.
The latest positive result could be career-ending for the wrestler, who may end up getting slapped with an an eight-year ban.
His place in India’s wrestling squad for the Asian Games will be taken by Ronak Dahiya, whom he defeated at the Lucknow trials.
“Yes, we have replaced Deepanshu with Ronak in the Asian Games squad. Anyway, his name was already there in the long list. This is Deepanshu’s second dope offence and he is facing a long eight-year ban,” a Wrestling Federation Of India (WFI) official was quoted as saying by The New Indian Express on Tuesday.
The Asian Games will be held from September 19 till October 4 in Aichi (Japan). At the last Asiad (China), the Indian wrestling contingent won six medals (1 silver, five bronze).
