Former Judge of the Supreme Court of India, Markandey Katju, said that he won’t be surprised if TMC leaders like Mahua Moitra, Sagarika Ghose, Sayoni Ghosh and Kunal Ghosh join the BJP in the coming days.
In another post, he wrote, “TMC leaders, you should declare we have won the election, and to hell with everybody. Hari Om.”
Katju’s statement came after BJP secured 207 seats in the West Bengal Assembly elections, while TMC managed to win only 80 seats out of 294. The result of the assembly poll was announced on May 4.
Post-poll violence erupts in West Bengal
Several cases related to violence have come to the light with many incidents related to vandalism at TMC offices across different parts of the state.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Wednesday issued a stern warning, saying strict action will be taken against those inciting violence and engaging in vandalism in the state.
The CEC has also ordered all District Magistrates (DMs), Superintendents of Police (SPs), and police officials—including the Chief Secretary of West Bengal, the DGP, the Kolkata Police Commissioner, and the DGs of the Central Armed Police Forces—to maintain continuous patrols.
Those inciting violence and engaging in vandalism in West Bengal will be arrested immediately, he said.
The cases of violence that are being linked to BJP workers are slowly spreading in state following assembly election results on Monday, May 4.
In a post on social media, TMC Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev shared a video, showing bulldozer action at New Market in Kolkata. “The so-called “new version” of New Market in central Kolkata now stands filled with bulldozers—tearing down meat shops and even party offices,” she said.
