The United Kingdom will increase the financial requirement for international students applying for a student visa from November 30, 2026. Under the revised requirement, students studying in London will need to show up to £14,130 for nine months of living expenses. This is an increase from the existing requirement of £13,761.
According to the UK Home Office’s Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules (HC 584), students planning to study in London will have to show £1,570 per month, up from the existing £1,529. Those studying outside London will need to demonstrate £1,203 per month, compared with the current requirement of £1,171.
For students studying outside London, the amount will rise to £10,827 from £10,539 for the same nine-month period.
The revised amounts apply for a maximum period of nine months, depending on the length of the course.
The financial requirement is separate from the tuition fees that students must pay. Applicants will also need to demonstrate that they have sufficient funds to cover any outstanding course fees mentioned in their Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).
Who Will Be Affected By The New Rules?
The revised financial requirement will apply to student visa applications submitted on or after November 30, 2026. The requirement applies to international students, including those from India, who need to demonstrate funds for their studies and living expenses in the UK.
Under the existing financial rules, applicants generally need to show that they have held the required funds for at least 28 consecutive days before applying. The funds must meet the prescribed conditions under the Immigration Rules.
What Indian Students Need To Know
Indian students planning to apply for a UK Student visa should factor in the revised living expense requirement while preparing their finances. Those applying from November 30 onwards will need to meet the new thresholds.
Students should also account for tuition fees, accommodation deposits, travel and other expenses while calculating the overall cost of studying in the UK.
The changes form part of the annual revision of the Student visa maintenance requirement. The Home Office said the updated amounts are aligned with the maintenance loans available to domestic students in the UK for the 2026-27 academic year.
Students are advised to check the latest requirements on the official UK government website before submitting their visa applications.
