A fresh political storm has erupted in West Bengal after Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA from Farakka, Monirul Islam, issued a direct and violent threat against the Election Commission amid the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state.
Addressing a gathering, Islam launched a scathing personal attack on the Chief Election Commissioner, using abusive language and issuing threats that appeared to target the poll body’s authority and security.
“This flag will not work. It has to be broken with a stick… I will drag him out of the grave,” the MLA said, accusing the Election Commission of harassing people in Bengal to “please the BJP” and demanding the commissioner’s resignation.
The remarks come just days after a violent incident during an SIR hearing at the Block Development Officer (BDO) office in Farakka, where supporters of the TMC MLA allegedly vandalised government offices.
The unrest took place in the presence of Islam, but no administrative or legal action has so far been initiated against him.
According to officials and local accounts, the SIR hearing was underway inside the BDO office when Islam arrived with party workers and supporters, who raised slogans outside the premises.
Soon after, the group allegedly forced its way into the BDO and Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) offices, pushed open chamber doors and carried out widespread vandalism, forcing officials to halt the hearing process.
The protesters claimed they were being harassed in the name of SIR.
The absence of police intervention during the incident has raised questions over law enforcement response, particularly as the disruption unfolded openly and in the presence of an elected legislator.
Reacting to Islam’s latest remarks, former Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury blamed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for what he described as a breakdown of governance.
“Everything is happening on Mamata Banerjee’s direct instructions,” Chowdhury alleged, claiming that core issues such as education, health, employment and industry have been sidelined ahead of the elections.
“There is no discussion on people’s real problems in Bengal. Only FIRs and political intimidation. The Chief Minister has created an atmosphere where SIR alone is being projected as deciding the fate of people’s lives,” he said.
The SIR exercise has become a major flashpoint in West Bengal’s charged political environment, with the ruling TMC accusing the Election Commission of acting at the behest of the BJP, while the opposition alleges systematic obstruction of constitutional processes.
The Election Commission has not yet responded to the MLA’s remarks or the allegations surrounding the Farakka violence.
