This meeting between Jaishankar and Wang Yi took place amid the border dispute that has been going on for five years in eastern Ladakh.

An important meeting was held between India’s Foreign Minister S Jaishankar and China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Laos. In this, the leaders discussed the India-China border dispute. Jaishankar asked the Chinese Foreign Minister to respect the LAC and the agreements made earlier.

Jaishankar said that stabilizing relations is in the interest of both countries. He told Wang Yi that the border dispute is the main reason for restoring India-China relations. He said that whatever the situation is on the border, the same will be reflected in our relations.

These two leaders met for the second time this month. During this, both the leaders agreed to give strict guidelines for disengagement on the border i.e. reducing the number of troops on the border from both the countries. Jaishankar and Wang Yi met earlier this month on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan.

Jaishankar and Wang Yi also met separately from the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' meeting.

India has said earlier too- relations will improve only if there is peace on the border
The External Affairs Minister has arrived in Laos to attend important ASEAN-related meetings aimed at strengthening India’s ties with the Southeast Asian country. S. Jaishankar is visiting Laos at the invitation of Laos Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Salimxay Kommasith. It was here that Jaishankar met the Chinese Foreign Minister on Thursday.

Relations between India and China have worsened since May 2020. India has previously stated that its relations with China cannot be normal until there is peace on the border.

20 Indian soldiers were martyred in the Galwan clash
In March this year, Jaishankar had said in Tokyo, the capital of Japan – There was peace on the border from 1975 to 2020. Everything changed in 2020 (Galwan clash). We (India-China) do not agree on many issues. It is a matter of concern when a neighbor violates written agreements. This raises questions on the stability of relations between the two.

20 Indian soldiers were martyred in the Galwan clash. In April-May 2020, China had gathered troops in the border areas of Eastern Ladakh on the pretext of exercise. After this, incidents of infiltration took place at many places. The Indian government also deployed troops equal to China in this area.

The situation got so bad that after more than 4 decades, bullets were fired on the LAC. During this time, on 15 June, 20 Indian soldiers were martyred in a clash with the Chinese army in the Galwan Valley. It was said that 38 Chinese soldiers were killed in the Galwan clash. However, China admitted the death of only 4.
