Congress leader and Rahul Gandhi aide Meenakshi Natarajan is at the centre of a political storm after her Rajya Sabha candidature was rejected on Tuesday.
Natarajan’s nomination for a Rajya Sabha seat from Madhya Pradesh was rejected by the Election Commission after objections were raised that she had failed to disclose details of a pending “case” in her nomination papers.
The case in question is reportedly pending before a court in Telangana. The Returning Officer rejected her nomination following a complaint by senior BJP leader and Madhya Pradesh minister Kailash Vijayvargiya.
According to the complaint, Natarajan did not disclose the pending case in Telangana in the affidavit accompanying her nomination papers, leading to the rejection of her candidature.
Natarajan and the Congress have denied the allegation, describing the rejection of her nomination as a “BJP attempt to manipulate the Rajya Sabha election.”

The development has left the Congress with little room to respond, as the party can no longer field another candidate because the last date for filing nominations was June 8.
From Student Politics To Rahul Gandhi’s Inner Circle
Meenakshi Natarajan, widely regarded as one of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s closest associates, has built a reputation within the party for her understated style of politics and organisational work, even as she remains a polarising figure in some Congress circles.
A native of Nagda village in Madhya Pradesh’s Ratlam district, the 52-year-old began her political career through the Congress’s student wing. She served as the president of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) from 1999 to 2002 before taking over as the state president of the Youth Congress, a position she held for the next three years.
Academically, Natarajan holds a Master’s degree in Biochemistry from Government Holkar Science College, Indore, and later earned a law degree from Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government Arts and Commerce College in the city.

Her rise in the Congress gathered momentum after Rahul Gandhi, who became the All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary in 2007, inducted her into his core team of young leaders in 2008. The same year, she was appointed an AICC secretary.
In 2009, Gandhi handpicked Natarajan to contest the Lok Sabha election from the Mandsaur constituency in Madhya Pradesh. She defeated BJP veteran Laxminarayan Pandey, an eight-time MP who had represented the seat since 1989, by a margin of 30,819 votes.
During her tenure in Parliament, Natarajan was an active participant in legislative proceedings, raising 135 questions on issues including assistance to widows of CRPF personnel, welfare measures for the families of war veterans, urban development, Hajj facilities and the Railways.
In February 2025, she was appointed the AICC’s in-charge for Telangana.
A Turbulent Tenure And A Controversial Remark
However, her tenure reportedly led to differences with several influential leaders in the state unit, including Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, who is learnt to have conveyed to the party leadership that her style of “simplistic” politics may work in north India but could hurt the party’s image in Telangana.

In 2013, Congress veteran Digvijaya Singh sparked controversy while praising her during a meeting of party workers in Mandsaur.
Calling himself a “seasoned smith of politics,” Singh said, “Our party MP Meenakshi Natarajan is a Gandhian, simple and an honest leader. She keeps going from place to place in her constituency. I am a seasoned smith of politics. Meenakshi is ‘sou tanch khara maal’ (totally pure).”
The remark drew criticism from political opponents and sections of the public, who described it as sexist and derogatory despite Singh’s apparent intent to praise her integrity.
