Dow Futures Jump 1,083 Points As Wall Street Rallies After Democrats’ Midterm Victory

Wall Street stocks raallied on Wednesday after the Democrats secured majorities in both chambers of the US Congress in the midterm elections, easing concerns over political uncertainty. Stock futures moved sharply higher, while major European benchmarks also gained as investors assessed the implications of the election results for businesses and the wider economy.

According to CNBC, futures linked to the Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 1,083 points, or 2.1%, while S&P 500 futures rose 1.1%. Nasdaq-100 futures gained 0.4%, although they lagged behind other major indices amid weakness in artificial intelligence-related stocks.

The S&P 500, which initially wavered as the Democratic victory became clear, had subsequently recovered. The index was expected to open around 1% higher when US exchanges began trading.

Markets Welcome Prospect Of Political Gridlock

The Democrats’ victories in the House of Representatives and Senate, along with key gubernatorial races, including Texas, have changed the political balance in Washington. Investors are now expecting the party to act as a check on President Donald Trump’s policies.

Trump has introduced business-friendly tax cuts but has also pursued tariffs and the war in Iranwhich has contributed to inflation concerns.

Another factor supporting the market rally was Trump’s response to the election outcome. He told The New York Times that he was “absolutely willing” to accept the results and told The Wall Street Journal that he and Republicans would work with Democrats.

“Still more uncertainty looms, but one thing is certain, there will be gridlock and historically this is good for the market,” Woods said as quoted by CNBC.

Andrew Slimmon of Morgan Stanley Investment Management also said markets generally favour a divided government because it limits the ability of one party to push through policies.

“The markets like gridlock — they don’t like a party with too much power,” he said.

AI Stocks Face Pressure Over Data Centre Restrictions

Despite the broader gains, concerns remain over companies that could be affected by Democratic policies. Before the election, investors had worried that a Democratic sweep could lead to tighter restrictions on data centre construction across the US, potentially affecting companies linked to the artificial intelligence boom.

The election of Gina Hinojosa as Texas governor added to these concerns. She has pledged an immediate moratorium on data centres in the state, a key hub for the industry.

Shares of Oracle and CoreWeave were heading lower on Wednesday, along with Elon Musk’s SpaceXwhich is headquartered in Texas. The New York Times also reported that major AI companies had edged higher in pre-market trading, despite the prospect of greater regulatory scrutiny.

Oil Prices Ease As Middle East Conflict Remains In Focus

Investors are also watching developments in the Middle East and their impact on energy prices and inflation.

Speaking to CNBC’s Squawk Box Europe, Slimmon said that if the election results increased pressure for a resolution to the conflict in the Middle East, oil prices could decline.

“That’s been an issue for the Fed, and inflation, and part of the reason that rates are higher,” he said.

West Texas Intermediate crude oil prices were down 1% on Wednesday.

Shares of companies linked to the wider economy led some of the early gains. Walmart rose 2%, while Bank of America gained 1.9%, as investors looked beyond technology stocks.

Healthcare companies also advanced. UnitedHealth rose 1.4%, Molina Healthcare gained 6.3%, Centene added 4.7% and HCA Healthcare climbed 1.44%. The Invesco Solar ETF jumped 5%.

The S&P 500’s recent movement, however, has been volatile. The index fell to around 7,530 on November 2 before climbing above 7,650. It subsequently declined to nearly 7,540 on November 3 before recovering towards the 7,560–7,570 range.
