US President Donald Trump on Thursday backed Republican Ohio gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy over a controversial campaign advertisement featuring the estranged mother of his Democratic rival, Amy Acton, amid mounting criticism of the attack.

Trump defended the advertisement as “very powerful” and accused the media of launching a “well coordinated attack” to pressure Ramaswamy into withdrawing it.

“Vivek should keep it up, and let everyone listen to the mother of a defective, dishonest, and incapable Candidate, explain how the daughter is a DISASTER who, uncontrollably, lies, cheats, and steals!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

Trump Slams Acton, Defends Ad

In his post, Trump used strong language against Acton, accusing her of dishonesty and attacking her character.

He quoted the advertisement’s claims and wrote: “I only wish the mothers of my opponents would be so brave as to come forward and explain that their son or daughter is a liar, and much worse.”

Trump also referred to his own mother, Mary MacLeod Trump, saying the media would give extensive coverage to any criticism she made of him.

The advertisement has drawn criticism because it features Acton’s mother, who remained married to a man accused of sexually abusing Acton during her childhood. The man fled before he could stand trial on the charges and has since died.

Acton Speaks Of Childhood Abuse

In the advertisement, Acton’s mother, identified as Arthur in the report, claims her daughter has “lied her entire life”.

Acton, however, said on Tuesday that she and her brother “endured abuse, hunger, and neglect” as children. She has also said she had not seen her mother since 1978.

The controversy has prompted criticism from Democrats and some Republicans, adding to the increasingly bitter tone of the Ohio governor’s race.

Vance Also Backs Ramaswamy

US Vice President JD Vance has defended Ramaswamy, describing him as his “good friend” while campaigning in Ohio, his home state.

Vance has also supported other attack advertisements targeting Acton, including claims about her alleged problems with alcohol.

Ramaswamy, a billionaire biotech entrepreneur who challenged Trump in the 2024 Republican presidential primaries, is now competing against Acton, a doctor and former state health department director, to become Ohio’s next governor.
