Vijay Sethupathi shares why he became an actor, leaves Kapil Sharma in laughs


Actor Vijay Sethupathi was set to make his debut on The Great Indian Kapil Showand a leaked promo from the upcoming episode had already given fans a glimpse of the humour and honesty he brought to the couch. Appearing alongside his Gandhi Talks co-stars Aditi Rao Hydari and Siddharth Jadhav, and composer A R Rahman, the actor left host Kapil Sharma laughing uncontrollably with his straightforward explanation for choosing acting as a profession.

During the conversation, Kapil asked Vijay if he had ever formally trained as an actor. Vijay responded that he had never attended an acting school and had instead worked as an accountant for a theatre group in his early days. Picking up on the moment, Kapil jokingly asked if seeing a star’s bank balance had inspired him to become an actor.

Vijay’s crisp reply became the standout moment of the promo. “No, I checked my account, there was no money to earn. (No, I checked my account – there was no money, so I had to earn it),” he said. The line drew loud applause from Siddharth Jadhav and Aditi Rao Hydari, while Kapil was visibly impressed and burst out laughing.

The appearance marked Vijay Sethupathi’s first time on Kapil Sharma’s popular comedy show. The team was on the show to promote Gandhi Talksa unique drama directed by Kishor Pandurang Belekar and produced by Zee Studios, Kyoorius and Moviemill.

The film, which featured no spoken dialogues, starred Vijay Sethupathi, Arvind Swamy, Aditi Rao Hydari and Siddharth Jadhav in lead roles, with music by A R Rahman. After premiering at the International Film Festival of India in 2023, Gandhi Talks was slated to hit theatres on January 30, 2026, with the episode of The Great Indian Kapil Show set to stream on Netflix from January 31.
