In a significant diplomatic intervention, US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a three-day ceasefire. The truce, which is scheduled to run from Saturday, May 9, to Monday, May 11, coincides with Russia’s annual Victory Day celebrations and is being framed by the White House as a potential turning point in the four-year-old conflict.

Prisoner Swaps and Victory Day Context

Posting on his Truth Social platform, President Trump revealed that the agreement includes a total suspension of all “kinetic activity” across the front lines. A central pillar of the deal is a massive reciprocal prisoner exchange, with 1,000 prisoners expected to be released by each country.

The timing is particularly symbolic, as May 9 marks Victory Day in Russia, commemorating the Soviet Union’s triumph over Nazi Germany in the Second World War. Trump noted that the truce acknowledges the shared history of the two nations during that era, stating that Ukraine was also a “big part and factor” of the historic victory.

A Personal Request from the Oval Office

The President claimed he personally requested the pause in hostilities during direct communications with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He expressed his appreciation to both leaders for agreeing to the halt, describing it as a move that could signal the “beginning of the end” of the war.

“Talks are continuing on ending this major conflict, the biggest since World War II, and we are getting closer and closer every day,” Trump added in his post. The announcement follows a period of intense mediation efforts by the US administration, including recent meetings between American officials and Ukrainian representatives in Miami.

Caution Amid Scepticism

Despite the President’s optimistic tone, the ceasefire comes at a time of deep-seated mutual suspicion. Both Kyiv and Moscow have previously accused one another of violating temporary truces, and neither capital has yet issued a formal confirmation to match the US President’s social media statement.

Observers note that while the ceasefire offers a much-needed humanitarian window and a platform for further negotiations, the situation remains precarious. With thousands of troops still entrenched along the front lines, the world is watching to see if the guns will truly fall silent this Saturday or if this “Victory Day” truce will be as short-lived as previous attempts at peace.
