A new French book has triggered controversy after claiming that French President Emmanuel Macron exchanged private messages with Iranian-French actress Golshifteh Farahani and that the exchanges may have led to a public spat with First Lady Brigitte Macron.

The claims are part of journalist Florian Tardif’s book Un Couple (Presque) Parfait (An Almost Perfect Couple), released this week.

Tardif claimed during an interview with RTL France that Brigitte Macron was upset after allegedly seeing messages exchanged between Macron and Farahani on Macron’s phone shortly before slapping him during an official visit to Vietnam in 2025.

The controversy relates to a viral moment from May 2025 when Brigitte Macron appeared to push or slap the French president while they were arriving in Hanoi. At the time, Macron dismissed the incident as playful behaviour and said the couple had been joking.

The book claims Macron had described Farahani as “very pretty” in one of the messages and maintained what the author called a “platonic relationship” with the actress for several months.

However, there is no independent evidence of any romantic relationship between Macron and Farahani. The French presidency has not officially commented on the latest claims. Representatives of Brigitte Macron have denied that she checked her husband’s phone or that the airport incident was linked to any messages.

Farahani has also denied rumours of an affair. In earlier interviews with French media, the actress said such speculation reflected people’s fascination with gossip and insisted there was no truth to the claims.

Macron camp denies allegations

Meanwhile, representatives for Brigitte Macron strongly denied the claims surrounding the alleged messages and rejected suggestions that she checked her husband’s phone.

“Brigitte Macron categorically denied this account directly to the author on March 5th, specifying that she never looks at her husband’s mobile phone,” a representative told Le Parisien.

Farahani also addressed the rumours earlier this year, dismissing speculation surrounding her relationship with Macron.
