The service is expected to strengthen overnight rail connectivity between Karnataka and Maharashtra, offering a faster premium travel option for passengers travelling through Hubballi-Dharwad, Belagavi and Pune. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had announced in May that the Bengaluru-Mumbai Vande Bharat Sleeper would be introduced soon. However, officials have clarified that commercial operations will commence only after the train successfully completes all performance trials, safety tests and receives the required approvals, as reported by Mathrubhumi.
Once operational, it will become the country’s second Vande Bharat Sleeper service. The first such train, launched in January 2026 between Howrah and Kamakhya, reduced travel time between the two cities by around six hours, showcasing the potential of India’s new generation of overnight semi-high-speed trains.
Coach Composition And Passenger Capacity: The Bengaluru-Mumbai Vande Bharat Sleeper has 16 coaches with a total passenger capacity of 823. The train comprises of 11 AC Three-Tier (3AC) coaches with 611 berths, 4 AC Two-Tier (2AC) coaches with 188 berths and 1 First AC (1AC) coach with 24 berths
Top Speed And Passenger Comfort Features: The train has been designed for a maximum speed of 180 kmph, although its operational speed will depend on route infrastructure and regulatory permissions. To improve overnight travel, the train features ergonomically designed berths with enhanced cushioning, automatic plug doors connected by vestibules for seamless movement, upgraded suspension system for a smoother ride, reduced cabin noise, modern interiors designed for greater passenger comfort and advanced safety systems onboard.
According to a report in Jansattathe Bengaluru-Mumbai Vande Bharat Sleeper is equipped with several modern safety and convenience features, including Kavach automatic train protection system, Emergency talk-back communication system, Advanced driver control interface, Disinfection technology to improve onboard hygiene and Aerodynamically designed exterior for better operational efficiency.
These systems are intended to enhance passenger safety while delivering a more comfortable and efficient overnight travel experience. With the train now in Bengaluru, the final phase of testing is expected to pave the way for its commercial launch, further expanding India’s growing network of premium Vande Bharat Sleeper services.
