Mass canine vaccination—rather than introducing routine pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for children—could be the most effective and economically viable strategy to eliminate human rabies deaths.
The breakthrough findings, published in The Lancet Regional Health – Southeast Asia, stem from a ten-year cost-effectiveness study conducted by the University of Glasgow alongside the London School of EconomicsKerala University of Health Sciences, and state health directorates.

Underestimating stray numbers means previous vaccination drives reached far smaller percentages of the animal host reservoir than intended, allowing the virus to persist despite heavy healthcare investments.
